Ten figures have inspired stories that they survived death or disappearance—but these are not ten equally credible mysteries. Amelia Earhart vanished during a 1937 flight; Elvis Presley’s 1977 death was reported and is supported by medical and eyewitness evidence. Other legends grew from alleged sightings, uncertain burials, mistaken identities or a famous prankster’s persona. A rumor’s persistence is not evidence that its subject survived.
Why survival rumors take hold
Stories about famous people rumored to be alive often begin with a gap: no confirmed remains, a closed coffin, an uncertain burial, a disputed photograph or an anecdote that sounds like a sighting. In other cases, the person’s public image makes a fake death seem imaginable. Those triggers can explain why a claim spreads without establishing that it is true.
The cases below differ in what is known and what remains uncertain. In particular, a disappearance such as Earhart’s is not the same kind of case as a celebrity sighting claim or an impostor’s identity claim.
Ten famous figures linked to survival rumors
1. Elvis Presley
Presley’s death was reported on August 16, 1977. Speculation followed soon after his funeral and continued in the form of alleged sightings, including claims that he appeared as an extra in Home Alone. A more elaborate theory held that he helped the FBI against a criminal group and entered witness protection. TIME reported that more than 760 released FBI files relating to Presley do not mention him aiding the bureau; they document extortion cases and his admiration for the FBI. The files are discussed in TIME’s account, rather than independently examined here: TIME’s review of Elvis survival theories.

Other claims point to the spelling of his middle name on his tombstone or alleged slips by family members. TIME notes that Presley began spelling his middle name “Aaron” later in life. These anecdotes do not carry the weight of medical and eyewitness evidence. Researcher Patrick Lacy told TIME, “All of the evidence points to a death — the medical evidence, the eyewitness report.”
TIME also reported a 1997 Gallup poll in which 4% of Americans surveyed thought Presley was alive, while 93% were certain he was dead. That is a historical poll, not a current measure of belief.

2. Tupac Shakur
Shakur remains a recurring name in lists of dead celebrities rumored to be alive. Common hooks include alleged sightings and the release of music after his death. Posthumous releases alone do not show that an artist survived; the available summary records the rumor’s circulation, not evidence for it. See WatchMojo’s list of dead people rumored to be alive.
3. Jim Morrison
Morrison’s survival legend has drawn on the fact that no autopsy was performed in Paris and on reports of later sightings. Skeptical Inquirer describes a rumor that he was alive and living in Oregon. That account documents a story’s circulation, not proof that Morrison survived: Skeptical Inquirer.

4. Andy Kaufman
Kaufman’s elaborate pranks and talk of faking his own death helped make the idea seem entertaining to some fans after he was reported to have died of cancer in 1984. But a reputation for staging performances is not evidence that a death report was staged. The claim appears in WatchMojo’s summary of the rumor.
5. Amelia Earhart
Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared during a 1937 flight. One survival theory proposed that Japanese forces captured them. In 2017, a History documentary promoted a photograph as evidence of capture, but Vanity Fair reported that the same image had appeared in a Japanese book published in 1935—before the disappearance. The photograph therefore cannot establish that Earhart survived or was captured. Her disappearance remains a historical question, but this particular image is not evidence of her fate. Vanity Fair’s account of the photograph and WatchMojo’s summary of the survival theory describe the claims.

6. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Most historians cited by CBS believe Cassidy died in a 1908 Bolivian shootout, though later stories claim he survived and returned to North America. No photographs of the bodies were taken, and conflicting accounts left room for speculation. CBS also recounts a manuscript attributed to William T. Phillips that two researchers argued was autobiographical; that interpretation remains disputed, not settled proof. HISTORY’s account says alleged sightings continued for decades. Read CBS News on whether Butch Cassidy survived and HISTORY’s list of people rumored to have survived their deaths.
7. Anastasia
Stories that Grand Duchess Anastasia survived the execution of the Romanov family gave rise to impostors, including Anna Anderson, who claimed to be the princess. DNA tests disproved Anderson’s claim, as summarized by WatchMojo. This is a survival legend built around mistaken identity, not an open question about Anderson’s identity.

8. Alexander I
After Emperor Alexander I died suddenly at 47, a closed-coffin funeral helped fuel a story that he had planned to leave public life and disappear. The story explains the legend’s appeal; it does not establish that he faked his death. The account appears in HISTORY’s list of people rumored to have survived their deaths.
9. Billy the Kid
The conventional account is that Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid—born William Bonney—in July 1881. Later uncertainty about the burial location and recollections from pallbearers helped survival claims persist. Disputed records or uncertainty over a burial site do not, by themselves, show that Bonney lived. See HISTORY’s account of Billy the Kid’s death theories and its list of survival rumors.

The strength of these stories varies. A disappearance leaves a different kind of historical uncertainty from a reported death followed by alleged sightings; an impostor’s claim can also be tested against evidence in a way that a rumor about a missing person may not be. In none of these cases does the material cited here establish that the person survived a reported death or disappearance.
Attention after death can help explain why names remain prominent without measuring belief in survival rumors. A 2021 study by Robert West, Jure Leskovec and Christopher Potts tracked English-language news and Twitter mentions for 2,362 public figures for one year before and after death. It found median increases of 9,400% in news mention frequency and 28,000% on Twitter. Those figures describe attention, not conspiracy belief or the truth of any survival claim. The study is available at arXiv.
