“Jerk” is a subjective label, and the documented accounts available here do not support a reliable list of ten. They do describe serious professional and creative conflicts involving the Smiths, Guns N’ Roses and Van Halen, as well as a former bandmate’s perspective on working with Prince. Those accounts are not interchangeable: some concern business disputes, others competing artistic visions or demanding work relationships. Here is what the reporting establishes—and what it does not.
Why this is not a ten-person list
A claim that someone is a “jerk in real life” is a judgment, not a verifiable category. To make it meaningful, an account needs to identify the conduct, who described it, and the context. A lawsuit or disagreement over music does not, by itself, establish that anyone behaved cruelly. The available reporting supports several cases of documented band conflict, but not ten distinct cases with sufficiently comparable, attributable evidence. Rolling Stone Australia’s account of band conflicts and its 2020 music-book roundup provide the basis for the examples below.
The Smiths: a band dispute, not a character verdict
Rolling Stone Australia describes personality differences between Morrissey and Johnny Marr during the Smiths’ short life and a later dispute over royalties. Morrissey and Marr were on one side of the legal dispute; bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce were on the other. The article reports the court outcome and quotes Morrissey discussing the case. This is evidence of a consequential band and business conflict. It does not establish that every participant behaved badly, or that a disagreement over royalties is proof of a general character flaw. Guns N’ Roses: creative control and lineup tensions
The same Rolling Stone Australia feature recounts tensions around Axl Rose bringing guitarist Paul Tobias into the band and Slash’s objection, alongside increasingly difficult recording sessions. The article draws on Slash’s memoir for his assessment of Tobias and the atmosphere in the group. That makes the account a retrospective view from one participant, not a neutral finding about everyone involved. The evidence points to a clash over the lineup and the band’s direction; it does not justify turning criticism of a colleague or a creative disagreement into a sweeping diagnosis of Rose’s character. Van Halen: Sammy Hagar’s account of leaving
Van Halen’s history includes changing lineups and conflict, including earlier tensions involving David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen. In its discussion of Hagar’s departure, Rolling Stone Australia presents differing accounts. Hagar, the band’s singer, gives his own version plainly: “Oh, I was fired.” That is Hagar’s account—not an undisputed finding about why he left or proof that one side alone was at fault. Prince: a former bandmate’s perspective
Rolling Stone Australia’s 2020 music-book roundup describes Prince as a demanding taskmaster who could be difficult to work with in the studio or on tour. It also discusses *My Life in the Purple Kingdom*, a memoir by BrownMark, Prince’s former bassist, about working with him. The roundup establishes the memoir as a first-person source and points readers toward a colleague’s perspective; it is not a substitute for the memoir’s specific claims. How to read stories about difficult musicians
- Separate the kind of conflict. A royalty lawsuit, a dispute over a band member, and a demanding studio or touring relationship are different things.
- Track who is speaking. A participant’s later recollection can be informative, but it remains that person’s account; a reported legal outcome establishes the dispute’s resolution, not a blanket verdict on character.
- Look for responses and context. The available accounts describe competing versions in some cases. Where a source does not establish a full response or the details behind a claim, avoid treating silence in that account as confirmation.
- Do not turn one episode into a ranking. These examples document friction; they do not provide a fair scale for deciding who is the “worst” person to work with.
