Some actors arrive on screen with years of dance study or stage work behind them; others trained intensively for a particular role. These ten performers stand out for different reasons, from ballet and tap credentials to memorable screen routines. This is an editorial selection, not an objective ranking: the evidence ranges from formal training and professional performance to preparation for a specific film.

What makes these actors stand out as dancers?

Dance ability can show up in several ways: sustained formal study, stage or professional dance work, or preparation that makes a demanding screen performance possible. Those paths are not interchangeable. The examples below identify what is documented for each performer and point to a film or performance where viewers can see that experience at work. The selection draws on Sarah L. Kaufman’s Washington Post feature published January 9, 2020, along with performer interviews and other cited sources.

10 actors with dance experience worth seeing

1. Zoe Saldaña

Saldaña studied ballet as a child and also trained in jazz, modern and Latin dance. Her dance background is especially relevant to the action roles for which she is known: she told Time, “Ballet sort of trained me for action.” Her early film Center Stage, set in the world of ballet, puts dance closer to the center of her screen work.

2. Tom Holland

Before his film career, Holland performed as Billy Elliot on London’s West End. Kaufman reports that he was spotted in a hip-hop class and then took further dance and gymnastics training. His path shows how dance can be part of an actor’s performance foundation, not simply a skill acquired for one scene.

3. Gal Gadot

Kaufman reports that Gadot studied dance for 12 years, including ballet, hip-hop, modern and jazz. Gadot told Vanity Fair, “I thought that I wanted to be a choreographer.” That breadth of study is a different kind of evidence from a single polished routine: it reflects an extended commitment to movement across styles.

4. Rosie Perez

Perez’s dance work began in front of an audience. She became a leading dancer on Soul Train and later choreographed for Diana Ross and the Fly Girls on In Living Color. Her career makes her one of the clearest examples here of dance as professional performance and choreography, rather than a background detail in an acting biography.

5. Catherine Zeta-Jones

Zeta-Jones won a British tap-dancing championship at age 11 and later performed in the London West End production of 42nd Street, according to Kaufman. She brought that musical-theater experience to screen roles including Velma Kelly in Chicago. The tap championship is a specific early credential; the West End work shows dance continuing into professional performance.

6. Christopher Walken

Walken learned tap and jazz as a child and studied at the School of the Performing Arts. His tap routine in Pennies From Heaven is a memorable example of that training on screen. It is a useful reminder that an actor’s dance reputation need not rest on a recent musical: some performers carry movement skills developed early in their careers into very different roles.

7. Charlize Theron

Theron studied ballet in Johannesburg and at New York’s Joffrey Ballet School, before a knee injury ended her pursuit of dance. Kaufman points to the physical demands of Atomic Blonde as a later screen example. Ballet study does not prove that every action movement is dance, but it helps explain why training in control, balance and movement can serve an actor beyond a traditional musical number.

8. Ansel Elgort

Elgort studied for five years at the School of American Ballet, according to Kaufman. The opening sequence of Baby Driver offers a striking screen example of movement coordinated with music and action. The training history and the sequence are distinct evidence: one establishes a sustained ballet background, while the other shows how rhythm can shape a film performance.

9. Penélope Cruz

Cruz studied ballet for nine years at Spain’s National Conservatory, as reported by Kaufman. Her salsa scene in Noel gives viewers a chance to see dance in a different style from her classical training. The contrast matters: ballet study is part of her documented background, but it should not be treated as proof that all dance styles are the same.

10. Jenna Dewan

Dewan brings both dance and acting experience to Step Up, and her account of preparing for the film makes the distinction between a dance background and role-specific rehearsal especially clear. In a 2006 interview, she said she auditioned in both acting and dance, then recalled: “Basically, we had four weeks of rehearsals ahead of time, so we did dance rehearsals eight hours a day.” That schedule is her account of this production, not a general rule for film preparation. Her later dance-program roles include hosting and mentoring on World of Dance and serving as lead judge on Come Dance with Me, according to ABC’s biography.

When a famous dance scene is not proof of years of training

A memorable routine can be impressive without establishing that an actor spent years studying dance. Hugh Grant’s Love Actually scene is a useful counterexample: at a BAFTA A Life in Pictures event, Grant said it was scripted, that he dreaded doing it, and that he did not rehearse it. That is Grant’s recollection, not independent verification of the production process. His story contrasts with Dewan’s account of extensive rehearsal for Step Up; one scene can be spontaneous by an actor’s account, while another is built through sustained preparation.

Likewise, choreography on screen does not by itself tell viewers which performer completed every movement or whether a dance double was used. The cited sources establish backgrounds and examples, not a movement-by-movement accounting of each production. It is more accurate to treat the films as illustrations of dance experience than as proof that every visible step was performed by the actor.

How to watch these performances with an eye for dance

  • Look for the kind of evidence. Stage work and choreography, such as Perez’s career, are different from formal study, such as Elgort’s ballet training, or a film-specific rehearsal process, such as Dewan’s account of Step Up.
  • Notice movement beyond a full routine. Rhythm, balance, timing and physical control can shape an action sequence or a character performance even when the scene is not presented as a dance number.
  • Separate the actor’s background from the finished scene. Training may inform a performance, but a film’s choreography, editing and possible use of doubles also contribute to what appears on screen.
