This ranking weighs how strongly James Gunn shaped each title, how much it marks a turn in his career, how clearly it shows his range, and how well it works for newcomers. It is an editorial recommendation, not a claim of consensus. Gunn’s roles differ from project to project, so each entry identifies whether he directed, wrote, or held another credit.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
This is the clearest starting point for Gunn’s signature mix: an unruly ensemble, sincere affection for outsiders, comic deflation, and sudden emotional stakes. The space-opera setting gives those traits room to collide, while the film remains accessible without prior Marvel knowledge. It is the most complete introduction to his crowd-pleasing, character-first style.

2. The Suicide Squad (2021)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
Gunn takes the superhero team formula somewhere nastier and less predictable than Guardians. The expendable-team premise lets him swing between grotesque action, absurd comedy, and moments of unexpected tenderness. Its unruly tone is a feature, not a bid for polish: this is the sharper, more chaotic side of his blockbuster voice.
3. Peacemaker (2022– )
Gunn’s role: Creator, writer, and director on episodes.

Rather than treating a supporting character as a punchline, Peacemaker gives him room to be ridiculous, defensive, and vulnerable across a season. The episodic format allows its character relationships and emotional turns to develop at a different pace from a film. Start with The Suicide Squad, which directly sets up the series.
Continuity has since shifted: DC’s 2025 guide says season two is set in the new DC Universe, while season one’s events remain largely intact, with limited differences to references and a cameo. Season one has not simply been erased. DC’s season-two guide discusses the transition.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
The trilogy’s conclusion puts the characters’ histories, especially Rocket’s, at the center. That focus makes it more emotionally demanding than the first film, but also gives the team’s jokes and loyalties greater weight. It works best after the earlier Guardians films, where its payoff has room to land.
5. Super (2010)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
This independent comic-book film is a useful counterpoint to Gunn’s franchise work. Its protagonist’s transformation into a costumed crime-fighter is abrasive and deliberately uncomfortable, not a sleek origin-story fantasy. It shows how far Gunn’s interest in absurdity, violence, and damaged people predates his large-scale superhero projects.

6. Slither (2006)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
Gunn’s feature debut is a horror-comedy built around an alien infestation and small-town body horror. Its practical grotesquerie and comic timing establish his genre roots, while its affectionate attention to oddballs foreshadows the ensemble sympathy of his later work. Choose it for horror-comedy rather than as an entry point to the superhero films.
7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Gunn’s role: Director and screenwriter.
The second film expands the series’ visual excess while making family—not simply the team’s banter—the central idea. Its emotional emphasis and spectacle are sometimes more sprawling than the first film’s, but it deepens the relationships that give the trilogy its shape. It is not the best first watch; its character work depends on the original.
Rank #4
8. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022)
Gunn’s role: Writer and director.
This compact musical side story trades the scale of a feature for a holiday detour in the Guardians’ world. Its smaller canvas makes it an easy add-on for viewers who already enjoy the team, rather than essential homework for someone new to them.
9. Creature Commandos (2024– )
Gunn’s role: Creator and writer of all seven first-season episodes.
Best Value
This animated DC series is notable for Gunn’s writing involvement and for establishing a DCU approach that connects animation and live action. It offers a less familiar group of characters than his best-known superhero work, making it a revealing pick for viewers interested in his current DC storytelling. DC’s 2023 slate announcement described it as a seven-episode series and said Gunn wrote every episode of its first season.

Gunn’s role: Writer and director.
Superman is a major new phase in Gunn’s career and the launch of DC’s shared universe. It is an important career marker, even if its place in a long-term ranking will depend on how the new DCU develops. Gunn has said he wants projects to preserve the individual artist’s sensibility rather than make every film feel alike: “I want each project to have the feelings of the individual artist that’s working on it and to give them a lot of freedom—as long as it works—to create something special because what I’ve found through Marvel, what wasn’t exciting was when movies were tonally the same.” He said this in a January 31, 2023 DC interview with Peter Safran.
DC’s September 2025 update calls Superman the launch of the shared DCU and announces Man of Tomorrow for July 9, 2027. That sequel is forthcoming, not part of this ranking.
Quick Recap
Where to start
- New to Gunn: Watch Guardians of the Galaxy for his most accessible blend of comedy and ensemble adventure.
- Want the darker edge: Try Slither for horror-comedy or Super for an abrasive independent take on the costumed-hero idea.
- Following DC: Watch The Suicide Squad before Peacemaker; approach Creature Commandos and Superman as part of the newer DCU phase.
- Following the Guardians: Watch the films in release order, then add the Holiday Special between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.
