How Many Temples Were Desecrated in India’s History? Richard Eaton on What the Evidence Can Tell Us

Richard M. Eaton’s 80 documented instances are a limited set of reasonably certain cases from 1192–1729, not a total for all of Indian history.

There is no reliable total for the number of temples desecrated across India’s history. Historian Richard M. Eaton identified 80 instances from 1192 to 1729 that he considered reasonably certain on contemporary or near-contemporary evidence. That is a documented set of cases, not a count of every event that occurred.

What Eaton’s figure of 80 means

In his 2000 chapter “Temple Desecration and Indo-Muslim States,” Eaton wrote that “we shall never know the precise number of temples desecrated in Indian history.” He then presented 80 instances whose historicity he judged reasonably certain, identified from epigraphic and literary evidence dating from 1192 to 1729. Read the chapter.

The distinction matters: 80 is neither a comprehensive total nor an estimate for all periods of Indian history. It is the number of cases Eaton regarded as sufficiently well supported within the period and evidentiary limits he set. His chapter itself cautions that its table cannot provide a complete picture.

Why the historical record cannot produce a precise total

The evidence is incomplete in more than one way. Some events were never recorded, and records that once existed may not have survived. At the same time, later chronicles sometimes attributed desecrations to rulers without contemporary evidence to support the claim. A count built only by adding every later attribution would therefore risk mixing well-attested events with uncertain ones.

In a 2015 interview with Scroll.in, Eaton described the evidence as “almost always fragmentary, incomplete, or even contradictory.” He warned against filling gaps with events that seem as though they “must have” happened. The interview’s puzzle analogy—including a reference to missing pieces—was an illustration, not a measured estimate of how much historical evidence has been lost. Read Eaton’s interview.

How Eaton interprets the documented cases

Eaton places many documented desecrations in the context of state conflict and territorial expansion. In his account, a royal temple could embody a ruling dynasty’s authority; attacking such a site could therefore be a way to strike at a political rival. He argues that this political practice preceded Muslim ruling houses in South Asia and that later Muslim kings also acted within existing regional political traditions. This is Eaton’s interpretation of the evidence, not a universal explanation for every incident.

That framing also cautions against treating every case as identical or reducing the history to one motive. Eaton associates the cases he documents with state action and political conflict, but his evidentiary standard and interpretation do not establish the motive behind every temple’s damage or the full history of every site.

Desecration was not the only state-temple relationship

Eaton’s broader discussion includes protection and patronage as well as destruction. In a separate essay, he describes a Sanskrit inscription reporting that Muslim officials were appointed to repair a Shiva temple in Kalyana in 1326, as well as later Mughal support for temples and religious institutions. These examples show why a state’s conduct during conquest should be distinguished from its policies after incorporating a territory. Read Eaton’s essay on temple protection and patronage.

What scholars dispute

A published 2023 article by Babul Roy questions whether historiographic evidence alone is enough to interpret India’s complex past. Roy calls for attention to ethnological and material evidence, along with local context. This is a methodological critique: it raises questions about how historical accounts should be interpreted, but it does not establish a replacement total for temples desecrated. Read Roy’s article.

The evidence and debate support a careful conclusion: Eaton’s 80 cases are instances he judged reasonably certain within a defined period, while the full number remains unknown. The sources cited here do not establish a comprehensive census or a defensible total for all of Indian history.
