Otto Waldron pushed Colter Shaw’s father, Ashton, off a cliff. But the Season 2 finale does not confirm that Mary ordered the killing: Otto says she asked him to be there, and showrunner Elwood Reid said there is more to that story.
Who killed Colter’s dad in the ‘Tracker’ Season 2 finale?
In “Echo Ridge,” Otto admits that he pushed Ashton Shaw off the cliff. The showrunner confirmed Otto’s account was true, making Otto the person who physically caused Ashton’s death. TV Insider’s finale interview with Elwood Reid and TV Guide’s recap and interview report the revelation.

What does Mary’s role mean?
The final exchange adds that Mary asked Otto to be at the scene. That detail raises questions about her involvement, but it is not proof that she told him to kill Ashton.
Reid made the distinction explicit in an interview with TVLine: “He doesn’t say that Mom ordered the murder of his father. He said, ‘she asked me to be up there,’ so there’s much more to that story to unpack.” Mary’s reason for asking Otto to be there, and what she intended, remain unresolved at the end of the episode.

How Colter connects Echo Ridge to Ashton
The answer emerges through the missing-person case that brings Colter back to Echo Ridge. While investigating a diner owner’s disappearance, Colter finds a carving made by his father. He traces it through Carl Murphy to Carl’s uncle, Otto, then confronts Otto at home. That chain leads to Otto’s admission. CBS’s episode listing describes the case as uncovering a decades-old kidnapping and a family secret.
