10 DC Superheroes With Multiple Identities: Aliases, Mantles and Code Names

“Multiple alter egos” can mean changing superhero names, a civilian identity, or a mantle shared by different people. These ten DC cases show the difference.

DC’s heroes are associated with several kinds of identity: a person may use a different superhero name over time, a mantle may pass between people, or a character may have a civilian name and a birth name. Those are not all “multiple alter egos” in the strict sense. This guide separates the categories and explains what each example actually represents.

What “multiple alter egos” means in DC stories

The phrase is often used loosely. A civilian identity is a person’s ordinary public-facing name; a birth name may differ from it. An alias is another name a person uses, while a superhero code name can change over that person’s career. A mantle, by contrast, is a heroic role that different people can hold. These distinctions matter: Clark Kent and Kal-El are names for one person, while Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally West are separate people who have each been the Flash.

The ten cases below include clear examples of changing names, legacy mantles and alternate-universe counterparts. They are not a definitive ranking of the ten most prominent DC examples, and not every entry is a person with several secret civilian identities.

One person, multiple names or superhero identities

1. Superman: Clark Kent and Kal-El

DC’s Superman profile lists Clark Kent and Kal-El under “Alias/Alter Ego.” They are not two separate superhero personas: Clark is the human identity in which he was raised, and Kal-El is his Kryptonian name. The profile identifies Superman as the last survivor of Krypton, raised in Smallville, and gives his first appearance as Action Comics #1 (1938).

2. Stephanie Brown: Spoiler, Robin and Batgirl

Stephanie Brown is the clearest example here of one person taking on several superhero code names. DC’s Stephanie Brown profile says she created the Spoiler identity, later became Batman’s fourth Robin, and operated as Batgirl. Her first appearance is listed as Detective Comics #647 (1992). These are successive identities in her history, not three different people.

3. Batman: Bruce Wayne and Matches Malone

Bruce Wayne is Batman, and DC’s Batman profile also lists Matches Malone among Bruce’s “AKA” names. Matches Malone is an alias Bruce uses; “Dark Knight” and “Caped Crusader,” also listed there, are epithets for Batman rather than separate identities. The distinction prevents a string of nicknames from being mistaken for multiple alter egos.

4. Jason Todd: Robin and Red Hood

Jason Todd’s story involves a change of superhero identity. DC’s Red Hood profile identifies him as a former Robin who adopted the Red Hood identity after returning from death. Robin and Red Hood are successive superhero names used by the same character; neither is an additional civilian identity.

One mantle, held by different people

5. The Flash: Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally West

“The Flash” is a legacy mantle, not one hero’s collection of secret identities. DC’s Flash profile names three men who have held the title: Jay Garrick, the first Flash; Barry Allen, who succeeded him; and Wally West, who later took up the mantle while Barry was believed dead. The profile lists all three in its “Alias/Alter Ego” field, but they are distinct people. It gives the first appearance as Flash Comics #1 (1940).

6. Green Lantern: Hal Jordan and a wider mantle

DC’s Green Lantern profile focuses on Hal Jordan. It identifies him as a test pilot who receives Abin Sur’s ring and becomes the first human Green Lantern, with Hal Jordan named as the alter ego. The Green Lantern name is also a mantle used by other characters in DC continuity, but this profile does not establish a full list of its holders. So this is a mantle example, not evidence that Hal Jordan personally has multiple civilian identities.

Named civilian identities, but not multiple alter egos

7. Wonder Woman: Diana Prince

DC’s Wonder Woman profile identifies Diana Prince as Wonder Woman’s alter ego. It describes Diana as an Amazon from Themyscira sent as her people’s emissary to the human world. That supports a civilian identity paired with a superhero identity, not several separate alter egos for Diana.

8. Aquaman: Arthur Curry

DC’s Aquaman profile identifies Arthur Curry as Aquaman and describes his ties to Atlantis and the surface world. The profile establishes that identity pairing; it does not establish multiple identities for Arthur. Aquaman therefore fits a broad discussion of names associated with heroes, but not a strict list of characters with multiple alter egos.

9. Calvin Ellis: the Superman of Earth-23

In a November 30, 2021 article about Justice League Incarnate, DC identifies Calvin Ellis as the Superman of Earth-23 and as the U.S. president who secretly acts as Superman. The article’s multiverse character guide supports a different person sharing the Superman mantle in another universe. Calvin Ellis is not another alias for Clark Kent.

10. Thomas Wayne: an alternate-universe Batman

The same DC article describes Thomas Wayne as an alternate-universe Batman, the “Knight of Vengeance,” in a history where his son was murdered. Thomas is a separate person who takes up the Batman mantle in an alternate universe, not Bruce Wayne using another civilian identity. This is a multiverse counterpart rather than a second identity within Bruce’s life.

How to tell the identity cases apart

Example What changes or is shared What the names represent
Clark Kent / Kal-El One person, two associated names Human identity and Kryptonian name
Stephanie Brown One person changes superhero names Spoiler, Robin and Batgirl are successive code names
Bruce Wayne / Matches Malone One person uses an alias Matches Malone is an alias; Dark Knight and Caped Crusader are epithets
Jason Todd One person changes superhero names Robin and Red Hood are successive code names
Jay Garrick / Barry Allen / Wally West Different people hold one mantle Each has been the Flash
Hal Jordan / Green Lantern A character holds a broader mantle The cited profile focuses on Hal Jordan; it does not provide a full roster of holders
Diana Prince / Wonder Woman One civilian/superhero pairing Diana Prince is the named alter ego
Arthur Curry / Aquaman One civilian/superhero pairing Arthur Curry is the named identity
Calvin Ellis / Superman A different person shares a mantle in another universe Earth-23’s Superman
Thomas Wayne / Batman A different person shares a mantle in another universe An alternate-universe Batman

For the strictest answer to “Which DC heroes have more than one alter ego?”, Stephanie Brown stands out for using several superhero identities, while Batman’s Matches Malone is a documented alias. Superman’s Clark Kent and Kal-El are two names for one person, and the Flash examples concern a mantle passed among three people. The remaining entries illustrate related identity pairings or mantle-sharing, not multiple secret identities held by one hero.
