Marvel’s movie is still listed by Disney as Thunderbolts*; The New Avengers is the identity its team adopts in the story and the name Marvel pushed in a post-release campaign. The distinction matters: Disney’s page uses both labels, but does not show that the film’s catalog title has been formally replaced.
What is the movie called now?
For catalog and film-title purposes, Disney still calls the movie Thunderbolts*. Its official movie page also features New Avengers-branded clips and describes the home-media poster as Thunderbolts*: The New Avengers, so the two names appear together rather than as a clean, universal title replacement. The New Avengers is the team identity revealed by the story and highlighted in Marvel’s marketing after the movie opened. In other words, the campaign reframed what the Thunderbolts call themselves; it did not clearly establish that the film itself had been retitled across Disney’s catalog.
How did the New Avengers reveal unfold?
The film opened in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025. Three days later, on May 5, Good Morning America reported Marvel’s cast-video reveal: the actors peeled away the original poster’s Thunderbolts* lettering to expose The New Avengers. The campaign caption crossed out the old name and presented the new one. Good Morning America’s report

Why did the title change seem unusual?
Lewis Pullman, who plays Bob, described the post-release maneuver as unprecedented in a May 8, 2025, interview with The Walt Disney Company: “That was an easy secret to keep, because it’s unprecedented to change the title of a movie right after it’s already been released.” His remark captures the surprise of the campaign, but Disney’s continued use of Thunderbolts* as the film’s page title is why it is safer to describe this as a team-name reveal and marketing treatment—not a confirmed formal catalog retitling. Who makes up the team?
Marvel’s press kit identifies the ensemble as Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. They are disillusioned castoffs drawn into a dangerous mission after Valentina Allegra de Fontaine sets a trap for them. Marvel’s press kit
Director Jake Schreier said the characters’ relative unfamiliarity gave the filmmakers room to work without the weight of longstanding audience expectations. He described their common ground this way: “There’s something that everyone can relate to in all of these characters.” Their shared emotional question, he said, is whether they withdraw after things go wrong or find connection and move forward.
