Who is the shooter in To Catch a Killer?
Dean Possey is the shooter. The film reveals his identity through the investigation rather than a competing suspect: contractor Rodney Lang tells Eleanor and Lammark that he used unrecorded laborers for renovation work, and a former slaughterhouse coworker recognizes Dean from the investigators’ description. How do Eleanor and Lammark find Dean?
Eleanor returns to the contractors who had access to the apartment used in the first attack. Lang admits that he subcontracted some work to unrecorded laborers to cut costs and recognizes Dean from the investigation. At a former workplace, a coworker recognizes Dean, helping Eleanor and Lammark locate the Possey family property.
The investigation unfolds amid pressure to settle on a public narrative before the evidence is secure. An early raid targets the wrong suspect, while department politics shape the case. These are events in the film, not a guide to real investigative procedure.
#1 Best Overall
- Baltimore. New Year’s Eve. A talented but troubled police officer (Shailene Woodley) is recruited by the FBI’s chief investigator (Ben Mendelsohn) to help profile and track down a disturbed individual terrorizing the city.
What happens at the Possey property?
Eleanor realizes Dean is hiding in an outbuilding at his mother’s property. Before the investigators can take him into custody, Dean shoots Lammark. Dean’s mother tries to persuade him to come out; he eventually enters and speaks with Eleanor.
Dean describes himself as rejected by society and voices contempt for its systems. Eleanor listens, but redirects the conversation to the grief his violence leaves behind. When patrol officers arrive, Dean believes Eleanor has betrayed him. He restrains her and attacks the approaching officers. Eleanor bites him to break free, then alerts the officers to where he is. Dean dies in the ensuing police gunfire.
Rank #2
After Lammark’s death, authorities agree to recognize him posthumously, and Eleanor is offered an FBI position.
What does the ending mean?
Empathy is not absolution
The conversation gives Dean’s violence a context: he speaks from childhood trauma, social isolation and alienation from work and society. Eleanor’s willingness to hear him does not excuse what he has done. Her response brings the focus back to the families who will live with the consequences. The scene can be read as a distinction between understanding someone’s grievance and accepting it as a justification for violence.

Eleanor’s offer is an uneasy resolution
The offer of an FBI role follows Lammark’s death and a negotiated outcome with the department. It represents a new opportunity for Eleanor, but the ending also leaves institutional interests in view. The film does not provide a definitive explanation of what its director intended by that compromise; this reading is an interpretation of the events on screen.
