Time Cut has an instantly legible hook: Lucy, a teenager from 2024, lands in 2003 just before a masked killer targets her older sister, Summer. Its most promising idea is not simply whether Lucy can stop the murders, but whether saving a sister she never knew will erase Lucy’s own existence. That family dilemma gives the Netflix slasher its clearest emotional charge; familiar genre beats and uneven suspense blunt the rest.
What is Time Cut about?
Netflix describes the 2024 film as a story about a teen who accidentally travels from 2024 to 2003, days before a masked killer murders her sister. Lucy tries to change what happens without destroying the future she came from. The film stars Madison Bailey as Lucy and Antonia Gentry as Summer, with Michael Shanks also in the lead cast; Griffin Gluck and Rachael Crawford appear in the expanded cast listing. Hannah Macpherson directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Kennedy.
The setup mixes a slasher, science-fiction time travel and teen drama, with the early-2000s setting supplying much of its nostalgic texture. Netflix labels it a horror title and rates it TV-14. Its official listing is on Netflix in the United States, though catalog availability and language options can vary by region and date. Netflix’s film page includes download availability.
Does the time-travel premise work?
The premise gives the film a strong emotional question, but the time jump does not automatically make its slasher mechanics feel new. In his October 30, 2024 review, The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee found the concept familiar beside earlier time-travel slashers, including Totally Killer and The Final Girls. His criticism focused on a lack of tension, distinctive kills and atmosphere, with nostalgia doing too much of the work.

That assessment points to the film’s central trade-off: the time travel matters most as a source of personal stakes, less as a consistently inventive engine for suspense. Viewers looking for a sharply atmospheric, frightening slasher may find the execution underpowered. The film’s appeal is more likely to rest on its approachable premise, family drama and period details.
Is it scary, or more sentimental?
Time Cut is a slasher, but the sister relationship is the idea that most distinguishes it from a straightforward killer-on-the-loose story. Lucy never met Summer in the future she remembers. Trying to save Summer means confronting the possibility that Lucy’s own life depends on her sister’s death. Macpherson described the dilemma to Netflix Tudum this way: “Lucy has to literally choose between her sister’s life and her own existence.”

Lee singled out a conversation between the sisters about how queer acceptance has changed as a comparatively original moment. He also described Bailey and Gentry as charming, while finding their roles underwritten. Other critical reactions differ in tone: Autostraddle’s Valerie Anne called the movie a “cute, fun time” with heart, while RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico wrote, “There’s so little ‘fun’ here, feeling as if everyone is merely fulfilling an obligation.” Those responses capture the divide between the film’s warmer interpersonal aim and viewers’ expectations of lively horror.
Does the Y2K nostalgia help?
The 2003 setting is central to the film’s identity, not just a date on the time machine. Its throwback atmosphere gives Lucy a visible contrast with her life in 2024 and offers familiar early-2000s details for viewers who enjoy period nostalgia. But nostalgia cannot carry every scene: Lee’s review argues that it does much of the work where stronger suspense and atmosphere are missing.

So the period setting is best approached as part of the entertainment rather than a guarantee of originality. If the main draw is seeing a modern teen navigate an earlier era while trying to prevent a slasher’s attacks, the conceit is clear and accessible. If the draw is a fresh time-travel mechanism or especially memorable horror, the critical response suggests more modest expectations.

The recurring reservations in the cited criticism are familiarity and weak suspense; the more favorable notes concern the leads’ charm and the story’s heart. For a comparison with another time-travel slasher, the useful questions are whether the time device shapes the plot, whether the horror has tension and memorable kills, and whether the nostalgia and character relationships strengthen or distract from the scares. Major ending spoilers below.
Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer reveals that the masked killer is Quinn’s future self; Quinn is played by Griffin Gluck. Lucy stops Future Quinn, and she and Summer remain together in 2003. Lucy’s former timeline no longer exists, resolving the film’s central choice by giving Summer a life at the cost of the future Lucy knew. Tudum reports that the production used prosthetic aging makeup for Gluck’s older version and filmed scenes featuring both versions in one night.

Should you watch it?
Time Cut is a reasonable choice for viewers who want an accessible teen slasher wrapped around a family story and a recognizable Y2K setting. Its sister-bond premise gives the danger an emotional dimension, but the published reviews suggest the film is less successful as a tense or distinctive horror experience. Netflix Tudum lists the runtime as 1 hour 32 minutes; Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour 31 minutes, so the sources do not agree on the exact length.
