Three Women is a 2024 Starz series adapted from Lisa Taddeo’s nonfiction book—not Robert Altman’s 1977 film 3 Women. Shailene Woodley plays Gia, a journalist and fictionalized author-proxy who gathers the intimate stories of Lina, Sloane, and Maggie. The series has compelling material, but its added reporting thread and divided attention make the journey uneven.
What is Three Women about?
The series follows three women whose experiences of sex, desire, and power become the focus of Gia’s reporting. Lina is a housewife confronting sexual and emotional neglect in her marriage. Sloane, a wealthy restaurant owner, navigates an open marriage. Maggie is a young woman dealing with the lasting consequences of a relationship with her high-school teacher.
Gia links the stories as she seeks the women out and records their accounts. That framing gives the adaptation a visible guide, but it also creates a fourth strand alongside the three subjects’ lives.
Why does the series feel structurally bumpy?
The stories are introduced together, then split apart, and the series has to keep returning to each while also following Gia. RogerEbert.com argues that the result remains too bound to the book’s structure and that Maggie’s account receives too little screen time. Its review puts the concern plainly: “Maggie’s story, which follows her grooming by her high school teacher to her court case against him, deserves more screen time than the series affords her.” RogerEbert.com

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

TIME makes a related criticism, describing the Gia material as “one woman too many”: the additional strand competes with the subjects for a limited amount of dramatic attention. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a universal verdict, but they identify a real adaptation challenge. The reporting frame can connect the accounts while also interrupting their momentum.
Does the adaptation give Maggie’s story enough attention?
RogerEbert.com’s answer is no: it argues that Maggie’s account and its legal consequences warrant more room. The imbalance matters because her storyline includes a relationship with a teacher and its aftermath, while the series must also develop Lina, Sloane, and Gia. The criticism is about allocation, not whether Maggie’s experience belongs in the story.

TIME’s broader concern about competing strands points to the same trade-off from another angle. Viewers who want the series to stay closely with one subject at a time may find the movement between stories frustrating; those interested in how Gia gathers and relates the accounts may find that frame useful even when it slows the individual narratives.
How does the series compare with Lisa Taddeo’s book?
Taddeo’s nonfiction book Three Women, released July 9, 2019, follows the sex lives of three American women. The series adapts that material but adds Gia as a fictionalized journalist and author-proxy, changing the original three-subject arrangement into a four-strand screen story. Kirkus’s description of the book and its discussion of the adaptation offer context for that shift.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Three Women worth watching?
It may be worth watching if you are drawn to intimate character stories and want to see how the series turns Taddeo’s nonfiction into a dramatized ensemble. The central limitation is its structure: Gia’s role gives the adaptation a connective thread, yet the extra strand and the movement among four lives can leave the subjects competing for attention. The criticism of Maggie’s limited screen time is especially relevant for viewers who want her story and its consequences developed more fully.
