Danny Garcia won Top Chef Season 21 after a four-course finale on June 19, 2024. Speaking with People after the win, he said he was proud of his food but did not think he had “hit a home run”: “There were mistakes, but I think I was able to pivot.”

Who won Top Chef Season 21?

Danny Garcia was named the Season 21 champion, ahead of fellow finalists Dan Jacobs and Savannah Miller. The finale aired Wednesday, June 19, 2024, and asked the finalists to prepare a four-course meal. The recap and interview appeared in a People story republished by Yahoo Entertainment on June 20, 2024. Read the interview and finale account.

What did Garcia say about mistakes in his finale meal?

In an interview with People at the 2024 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Garcia said he was pleased with the food he served, while acknowledging that the meal did not feel flawless to him. “I was proud of the food that I put up and I was happy with the way things were turning out,” he said. He added, “I didn’t think that I hit a home run.”

His summary was that he made errors but adjusted as the finale unfolded: “There were mistakes, but I think I was able to pivot.” That is Garcia’s own assessment of his execution, rather than a detailed account of which individual dishes or decisions fell short.

How did the finale unfold?

The reported result came down to Garcia, Jacobs and Miller’s four-course meals. The People account described the contest as close between Garcia and Jacobs and noted that Jacobs’ courses also received compliments. After Garcia’s dessert course, host Kristin Kish said, “It is the perfect end to his progression.” The published account does not provide a complete dish-by-dish judging record or scoring breakdown, so it does not support a more granular comparison of the finalists’ performances.

What did Garcia say he learned from the show?

Garcia said simplicity was an important lesson: he wanted to let the fish take the lead instead of adding elements that did not improve it. Describing the approach he wanted for his restaurant, he said, “I want to cook food where I just can showcase the fish and you don’t need to put all of the frilly bullshit on top of it to make it delicious because it’s delicious as it is.”

What are Garcia’s plans for the prize and Time and Tide?

Putting the prize toward a home

The interview reported a $250,000 prize. Garcia said he planned to put the money toward a home with his wife, Sumaiya Bangee. The figure is reported in the 2024 interview account and is not independently corroborated there against an official show source.

A seafood restaurant concept

Garcia described Time and Tide as a New York seafood restaurant concept built around global, sustainable and seasonal seafood, with the framing of a classic New York steakhouse. He said he wanted the cooking to showcase fish without unnecessary additions. The interview describes his concept and plans; it does not establish whether the restaurant has since opened or is currently taking reservations.
