Danielle Deadwyler gives The Woman in the Yard a committed, emotionally grounded center, but the film’s grief-inflected horror concept is less persuasive than its unsettling images. Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2025 film builds a distinctive mood around an isolated home and a mysterious visitor; its story, however, can feel choppy and its metaphors more explicit than illuminating. Whether that imbalance works depends on how much you value atmosphere over narrative clarity.
What is The Woman in the Yard about?
Ramona, played by Deadwyler, is a widowed mother living with her children in an isolated home. One day, a mysterious woman appears in the yard. That spare setup places the family’s immediate unease at the center without giving away the film’s turns.

Does the horror concept work?
The woman and the house invite a reading of the story through grief and depression. That interpretation helps explain why the film favors unease and symbolic images over a straightforward, threat-driven horror plot. But it is an interpretation, not a single definitive explanation the film’s premise establishes.

The approach divides the experience. Rotten Tomatoes’ review summary describes the metaphor as heavy-handed, while RogerEbert.com criticizes the narrative as choppy and meandering. NME, by contrast, emphasizes the film’s impressionistic attention to grief and depression. The result is conceptually legible but not always subtle: some viewers may find the symbolism emotionally direct, while others may feel it narrows the mystery rather than deepening it.
What works: Deadwyler and the visual atmosphere
Deadwyler gives the film its strongest anchor
Deadwyler commits to Ramona’s distress, and even critical responses that question the storytelling identify her performance as a strength. She gives the film a human point of contact when its ideas threaten to become more prominent than its characters.

The setting creates a controlled unease
The isolated house is more than a backdrop. The Guardian’s review highlights the carefully composed relationship between the woman and her surroundings, as well as striking imagery. That visual control gives the film a deliberate, watchful quality, even when the plot’s movement feels uncertain.
Is The Woman in the Yard scary or confusing?
It is better approached as atmospheric, psychological horror than as a reliably scare-driven film. The tension comes largely from the visitor’s presence, the family’s isolation and the story’s symbolic unease. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience excerpts include one viewer saying, “I was expecting more of a horror movie”; that is an individual reaction, not a measure of audience opinion overall.

Confusion is also a matter of expectation. If you want a tightly plotted mystery that steadily clarifies its rules, the meandering structure may frustrate you. If you are comfortable with impressionistic storytelling and unresolved meaning, the ambiguity may be part of the appeal. Another Rotten Tomatoes audience excerpt calls the film “drawn out and weird and anticlimactic and confusing”—again, one viewer’s response rather than a representative poll.
Verdict: worth watching for the performance and mood?
The Woman in the Yard has a strong lead performance and a visually purposeful atmosphere, but its conceptual horror does not land with equal force in every scene. The grief-centered reading is clear enough to shape the film, yet some viewers may find it too blunt, while the narrative’s meandering stretches weaken the build. Choose it for Deadwyler and unsettling imagery more than for a crisp, conventional horror payoff.
