Gwendoline Christie’s career is more than a run of memorable fantasy and science-fiction roles. She trained at Drama Centre London, reached a major screen part later than many actors, and prepared for Brienne of Tarth with weeks of reading and physical work. These ten details trace how that training, persistence, and deliberate character-building shaped a career that now spans Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Sandman, Wednesday, and Severance.
1. She earned a First at Drama Centre London
Christie graduated from Drama Centre London in 2005. In a GamesRadar interview, she described the training as complex but wonderful and said she earned a First. The formal training is an early counterpoint to the unconventional screen profile that followed.
2. Her first proper screen role came at 33
A late start on screen did not mean a late start in performance, but Christie’s first proper screen role came when she was 33, according to The Guardian’s 2019 profile. That milestone makes her subsequent rise—from Brienne to major franchise and television roles—especially striking.
3. She kept dog-walking for Simon Callow after her Thrones debut
Christie continued dog-walking shifts for actor and mentor Simon Callow even after her Game of Thrones debut in 2012, The Guardian reported. The detail captures how gradual a career transition can be: appearing in a hit series did not instantly replace the work that had supported her beforehand.

4. She spent eight weeks preparing to audition for Brienne
For the Brienne audition, Christie prepared for eight weeks, reading three books by George R. R. Martin and training physically, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those numbers describe Christie’s preparation for this audition, not a general rule for casting or a measure of other actors’ work.
5. She practiced Brienne’s walk on dog-walking shifts
Her day job became part of her character work: the Los Angeles Times reported that Christie spent hours perfecting Brienne’s stride while walking Callow’s dogs. Rather than treating the character’s physicality as just armor and swordplay, she worked on the way Brienne moved through the world.

6. She learned sword fighting in Belfast
Christie traveled to Belfast to train with stuntman C. C. Smiff. “When I first got the part, I had to travel to Belfast a few times a week to learn how to sword fight,” she told British Vogue. She also said that learning to move, speak, and breathe differently helped bring Brienne to life.
7. Brienne’s physical demands went beyond swordplay
Christie described the role as demanding physical training and horseback riding as well as learning to fight. That broader preparation helps explain why Brienne’s physical presence feels so integral to the character: the work involved more than rehearsing combat sequences. Christie summed up the experience to British Vogue as “Intense, brutal – and liberating.”

8. Her roles often put her in positions of authority
The Guardian noted a recurring pattern in Christie’s parts: royals and royal bodyguards. Brienne is a sworn protector; Captain Phasma in Star Wars is an armored commander; and Principal Larissa Weems in Wednesday leads a school. That pattern is not the whole of her career, but it helps explain why directors repeatedly cast her as a commanding presence.
9. She has played a high-fashion Lucifer—and a very different range of characters
In The Sandman, Christie’s Lucifer moves far from the armored and protective roles associated with Brienne or Phasma. Netflix Tudum reports that the character’s striking costume was developed with designer Giles Deacon. The contrast is one way to see the range in Christie’s screen work: from warrior and bodyguard to supernatural ruler, school headmistress, and Lorne in Severance.

10. She has two Emmy nominations, not two wins
The Television Academy lists Christie as a 2019 supporting actress nominee for Game of Thrones and a 2025 guest actress nominee for Severance. The record identifies nominations; it does not list either as a win. The current record is available on the Television Academy biography page.
What these details show about Christie’s career
Christie’s route has combined classical training with roles that depend heavily on silhouette, movement, costume, and command. Her own account of being seen through her height makes the casting challenge clear: “It’s difficult, because many people can’t see past my height, and it’s been very difficult to be considered for parts simply because I’m six foot three,” she told GamesRadar. That is her description of her experience, not an independently measured industry statistic. Her career’s breadth—from Brienne and Phasma to Lucifer, Weems, and Lorne—shows why it is too narrow to define her by a single franchise.
