Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Director Francis Lawrence says the delay was not a lack of interest: the filmmakers continued to love the world of Constantine, but the renewed push to get a sequel moving began around the original film’s 15th anniversary. He also points to the first film’s early reception and says a sequel could let the team make a more fully R-rated story. Those explanations describe creative intent and development discussions—not confirmation that Constantine 2 is in production.
Why did the sequel take so long?
Lawrence’s account is that the desire to return endured, while serious activity picked up much later. In a December 2024 interview, he recalled that around the original film’s 15th anniversary, the group held a Zoom discussion about “trying to get it up and going again.” He said they had become more active and were working through hurdles. ComicBook.com interview, December 18, 2024.
The timeline helps explain the headline’s “20 year” wait: the first Constantine was released in 2005, and renewed sequel coverage arrived around its 20th anniversary. It does not mean a sequel had been in continuous production for two decades.
How the first film’s reception shaped the interest
Lawrence said the filmmakers had always loved the character and world, but that the original adaptation faced criticism from viewers who wanted the comic-book Constantine to be blonde and English. He described opinion as having shifted over time. That is Lawrence’s explanation of the film’s changing reception, not a measured account of all audiences or the sole reason a sequel took years to develop. ComicBook.com.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
His point is that enduring enthusiasm among the people involved did not automatically translate into a sequel getting underway. The later anniversary discussion was a renewed effort to move the project forward.
What Lawrence wants from Constantine 2
Lawrence has said he wants the sequel to use an R-rated approach more fully. In the 2024 interview, he described wanting permission to make a “real R-rated movie.” That is his creative aim, not a confirmed rating or evidence that the film has been greenlit. ComicBook.com.
