A celebrity “glow-up” is an opinion about public image, not an objective measure of attractiveness—and the available reporting does not support a responsibly sourced list of 10 people who “glowed up” and 10 who did not. One well-documented example is actor Matthew Lewis, whose changing appearance while playing Neville Longbottom became a public talking point. His story also shows why a photo comparison cannot reduce an adult’s appearance to puberty alone.
Why this title’s 10-and-10 split doesn’t hold up
Calling one person a “glow-up” and another a case of “didn’t” presents subjective judgments about real people as if they were facts. A fair comparison would need the same criteria for everyone, clearly dated images, and reliable reporting on changes in styling or presentation. It would also need to avoid treating audience reaction as a person’s own view of their appearance.
The available reporting supports a careful look at Matthew Lewis’s public transformation narrative, but not a verified roster of 20 celebrities. Filling out the list with names based on viral before-and-after posts would risk repeating unsupported claims, so this article does not assign people to either appearance-based category.
Matthew Lewis: a documented change in public image
Lewis played Neville Longbottom across the Harry Potter films. In a recollection attributed to him from a 2013 Big Issue interview, he said that between the second and third films he grew quickly and lost facial “puppy fat,” and wondered whether the production would recast him. TIME recounted the remark in 2020. It describes his experience, not a rule about what puberty does to anyone’s appearance.

The comparison is also between an actor and a character shaped by production decisions. An interview in Lewis’s press archive discusses his changing appearance during filming and the response to it, while the films used costuming and prosthetics for Neville. Those choices, alongside Lewis’s growth, helped shape what audiences saw on screen.
Public attention is not the same as personal confidence. In an interview with Attitude, Lewis said, “I’ve never considered myself good-looking.” That statement is his own perspective; it should not be overwritten by the way viewers described his appearance.

What before-and-after comparisons can’t establish
They cannot prove cosmetic surgery
A pair of photographs cannot establish whether someone had a procedure. Jennifer Lawrence addressed comparisons of her face from age 19 to 30 by attributing the differences to growing up, losing facial weight, and aging. Kylie Jenner discussed lip fillers and the effect of makeup. Their conversation, reported by the Los Angeles Times, is a reminder that separate explanations can underlie images circulated as evidence of surgery. Do not diagnose or repeat a procedure rumor from photos alone.
They can reflect styling and image-making
Makeup, hair, clothes, lighting, camera angle, editing, and retouching all affect how someone appears in an image. In an interview with TIME, Zendaya discussed beauty standards and objected to retouching that changed her image. A comparison may say as much about how a photograph was made as it does about the person pictured.

A more responsible way to discuss a celebrity transformation
- Identify the time points. Say which years, roles, or public appearances are being compared rather than treating “before” and “after” as self-explanatory.
- Describe what is documented. Separate a person’s own account from changes in makeup, costume, photography, or editing.
- Attribute opinions. If calling a transformation a “glow-up,” make clear that it is an editorial judgment, not a factual assessment of someone’s worth or attractiveness.
- Skip unsupported explanations. Do not attribute a difference to puberty, weight change, or cosmetic work without reliable evidence.
- Use respectful context. Avoid sexualized comparisons involving images of minors and use photographs only with appropriate licensing and context.
