Kate Carter and Tyler Owens do not kiss at the end: they spot another tornado and head out to chase it together. Daisy Edgar-Jones said Steven Spielberg suggested avoiding a kiss, but director Lee Isaac Chung’s own explanation is that Kate’s payoff is finding her way back to storm chasing, not reaching a romantic finish line.
What happens at the end of Twisters?
At the airport, Kate is preparing to leave when Tyler turns up. The scene initially resembles a romantic goodbye, but the pair notice another tornado approaching and go after it together. The film ends with Kate choosing to return to the work she loves, alongside someone who shares that passion.

That ending resolves Kate’s return to storm chasing, but it leaves her relationship with Tyler open. They leave together to pursue a storm; the film does not confirm that they become a couple or show what happens to them later.
Who decided to leave out the kiss?
There are two related accounts, and they should not be collapsed into the claim that Spielberg alone cut the scene. Edgar-Jones said Spielberg suggested that Kate and Tyler should not end the film with a kiss. Chung, meanwhile, said he filmed both a kissing and a no-kiss version and preferred the latter.

Edgar-Jones on Spielberg’s suggestion
Edgar-Jones described the choice as a way to avoid a clichéd romantic button and leave the characters’ story in motion: “I think it stops the film feeling too cliched, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story. They’re united by their shared passion for something.” Her account of Spielberg’s suggestion was reported by TheWrap and Variety.
Chung on the ending he preferred
Chung’s rationale centered on Kate’s arc. “I just felt like this movie is so much more about Kate’s inner journey. In that original movie, it’s about those two equally, I feel. And this one, it’s a lot about Kate. I just felt what she’s trying to earn at the end is not a kiss,” he said in an interview reported by Dexerto.

Chung also described the image of Kate and Tyler chasing another storm as the more satisfying payoff: “I felt like this ending of Daisy and Glen going off to chase another storm together was somehow so emblematic of that, and that was ultimately more satisfying than seeing these two kiss.” He said the filmed kiss version was “very polarizing” with audiences, but that description is qualitative; no numeric audience-test result is established in the reported account.
Why does the ending focus on Kate’s return to chasing?
Kate’s ending is about regaining a sense of purpose after fear pulled her away from the work. Going toward another storm makes that change visible: she is not simply watching Tyler continue his life as a storm chaser; she chooses to join him. The shared pursuit also brings the story back to the work, friendships, and community that give her joy.
Glen Powell likewise said the film was not about the characters finding love so much as Kate returning to storm chasing, according to TheWrap. The no-kiss ending does not rule out romance. It simply avoids presenting a kiss as the definitive reward for Kate’s journey.

The 1996 film ends with Jo and Bill kissing after surviving the tornado. Twisters declines to repeat that romantic payoff: Kate and Tyler’s final connection is expressed through the decision to chase another storm together. As Edgar-Jones’s comments suggest, the open-endedness is intentional—their shared passion unites them, while their romantic future remains unresolved. The comparison is about these two endings, not a claim about what audiences generally want from romance.
