Sara Haines addressed the position itself and its possible effect on voters; Joy Behar questioned whether the move was genuine; Alyssa Farah Griffin focused on its strategic and commercial value; and Sunny Hostin speculated about its effect on Donald Trump’s campaign. Those were the hosts’ interpretations—not established explanations for why Melania Trump included the passage.
What did the hosts say about Melania Trump’s remarks?
The segment, reported by TV Insider on October 3, 2024, followed the publication of an excerpt from Melania Trump’s memoir, Melania. The hosts did not offer one shared reading of the passage: their comments ranged from agreement with its stated principle to skepticism about its timing and purpose.
Sara Haines: agreement, with a political caveat
Haines agreed with the substance of the position but raised a possible political cost: voters who treat abortion as a single-issue concern might react negatively. Her point was about how the statement could land with voters, not evidence of how they actually responded.
Joy Behar: suspicion about authenticity
Behar questioned whether the stance was truly Melania Trump’s initiative. TV Insider quoted her saying, “I think they put her up to this. I think it’s a big scam.” That was Behar’s on-air opinion; the coverage does not establish that anyone put Melania Trump up to making the statement.

Alyssa Farah Griffin: strategy and book sales
Griffin described the timing as strategic and suggested the controversy could make the memoir more interesting to potential buyers. This was her interpretation of the release’s possible political and commercial effects, not a documented account of the author’s intentions.
Sunny Hostin: speculation about the campaign
Hostin speculated that Melania Trump wanted to undercut her husband’s presidential bid. In a recap published October 4, The Independent reported that Whoopi Goldberg interjected that Hostin’s claims were “alleged.” The distinction matters: the discussion presented speculation, not proof of a motive or an effect on the campaign.

What did the memoir passage say?
In the excerpt as reported by CBS News, Melania Trump argued that women should have autonomy in deciding whether to have children, describing individual liberty as giving a woman authority to terminate a pregnancy. CBS attributed the excerpt to The Guardian, which said it had obtained a copy of the book.
The reported passage also named rape or incest, risks to the mother, congenital birth defects, and severe medical conditions as legitimate reasons for abortion. It characterized abortions later in pregnancy as rare and often associated with severe fetal abnormalities, and expressed support for parental-consent requirements for minors. These details describe the passage reported in the news coverage; they should not be treated as a complete account of the memoir or a full policy platform.

On October 3, Melania Trump posted a video stating, “Individual freedom is a principle that I safeguard,” and saying, “Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women possess from birth.” She also asked, “Individual freedom — what does my body, my choice really mean?” CBS News transcribed the remarks from her video.
How did Donald Trump respond?
Donald Trump said he told his wife to write what she believes: “You have to write what you believe. I’m not going to tell you what to do.” CBS News reported that response in connection with an interview with Fox News. It records what he said about her writing; it does not show that he adopted her position on abortion.
