Underwood connected the remark to his years in the closet; Rapaport said he meant it as game-related trash talk and later expressed regret that it hurt or offended him.
What did Michael Rapaport say to Colton Underwood?
The exchange took place during Episode 5’s elimination Roundtable, as Underwood tried to persuade the group that Rapaport was a Traitor. The dispute followed an earlier failed effort to turn votes against Tiffany Mitchell. When Candiace Dillard Bassett asked Rapaport to explain his earlier yelling, he defended himself and Mitchell, accused Underwood of organizing votes against a Faithful, and told him to keep quiet.
Rapaport then said: “And nobody in this room would be better at holding a secret than you.” The sequence and quotation appear in Peacock’s official Episode 5 recap, published January 15, 2026.
Why did the comment upset Underwood?
Underwood responded, “There it is. There it is,” and asked, “You think it was fun for 29 years of my life?” Peacock’s recap notes that Underwood had spoken publicly about coming out as gay at breakfast earlier that day. His response connected Rapaport’s “holding a secret” remark to the time he had spent closeted.

Rapaport immediately denied that he was referring to Underwood’s sexuality and said he believed Underwood had entered the game wanting to be a Traitor. Johnny Weir, Maura Higgins, and Lisa Rinna conveyed that the comment was hurtful; Maura called it “a low blow.” The disagreement was not only about Rapaport’s stated intent: Underwood and other contestants were reacting to how the words landed in that context.
How did the Roundtable exchange end?
Rapaport first said, “I apologize if he took it that way.” Later, in a confessional, he said he had been backed into a corner and may have fought too hard. He described the remark as being about the game and said: “It had nothing to do with his sexuality. I really, sincerely apologize if I offended Colton or anybody in the house. That absolutely wasn’t my intention.”

Peacock’s recap also describes frustration with Rapaport dominating the discussion. Some contestants wanted him gone whether he was a Traitor or a Faithful. The overwhelming majority voted to banish him; Rapaport then revealed he was a Faithful and joked, “You voted out the best-looking, smartest, dopest… Faithful.”
What did Rapaport say afterward?
In a post-elimination interview with Parade, Rapaport said he had been “riffing” and “talking trash,” believed Underwood was a Traitor, and intended his words in the context of the game. He said he had not meant to offend Underwood and apologized. That is Rapaport’s account of his intention, rather than something that can be independently established from the exchange.

On January 22, Reality TV World relayed Rapaport’s regret: “I do regret that it hurt his feelings” and “I do regret that it offended him… I wish I had used different words. I wish it never happened.” The report also relayed Underwood’s point that people who have had to hide part of themselves can be especially sensitive to comments or digs about that experience.
Rapaport later said he contacted Underwood privately after filming to apologize, and that Underwood accepted and wanted to move forward. Parade reported that account through Rapaport; the private conversation is not independently confirmed in the available reporting. In a January 28 report, TMZ also described Rapaport saying on Andy Cohen’s show that he had been riffing, had not intended a reference to Underwood’s coming-out experience, and felt bad when he saw Underwood was hurt.

The clearest documented response is the one in the episode: multiple contestants objected to the remark, and the Roundtable became more contentious. The Independent also covered criticism from selected viewers on social media. That coverage shows the exchange prompted criticism, but it is not a representative audience survey; no reliable poll or named statistic quantifying viewers’ reaction is established here.
