The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuted with a 44% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, according to GamesRadar’s April 1, 2026 report, which counted 84 critic reviews. That was below the 59% reported for The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the same comparison. The sequel’s score later shifted: Rotten Tomatoes showed 42% from 226 critic reviews on October 7, 2026. These are dated snapshots, not fixed ratings.
What was the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes debut?
GamesRadar reported on April 1, 2026 that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had a 44% Tomatometer score based on 84 reviews. The report compared it with 59% for the 2023 animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. GamesRadar’s launch-day coverage is the source for that dated comparison; Rotten Tomatoes’ live page is not a historical archive.
By October 7, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed 42% from 226 critic reviews for the sequel, while its comparison module showed 58% for the first animated film. The launch report’s 59% and the later 58% are not a contradiction so much as a reminder that scores can change as reviews are added or classifications shift. Always attach a date and review count to a Tomatometer percentage.
Calling the sequel a franchise low is defensible only within the narrow comparison of these two recent animated theatrical films: the sequel’s reported debut was below the first film’s score. The figures here do not establish a ranking across every Mario screen adaptation.

What do the scores measure?
The Tomatometer is the share of counted critic reviews classified as positive. It is not an average star rating, a direct measure of how much critics liked the film, or a box-office result. Rotten Tomatoes also displayed an 87% Popcornmeter score from more than 10,000 verified audience ratings on October 7, 2026. That audience figure represents a different group and rating system, so it should not be treated as interchangeable with the critics’ 42%.

The score does not show that critics’ reactions affected ticket sales. Nintendo said the first film earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide, but that is a figure for the 2023 movie, not evidence about the sequel’s commercial performance.

Why did critics disagree?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus, displayed on October 7, praises the sequel’s colorful world-building and visuals but says its thin story undermines the result. The site’s audience summary takes a more celebratory tone, highlighting Nintendo nostalgia, Easter eggs, joyful wonder and the cast. Both are aggregator summaries of submitted reactions, not universal verdicts. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page displays the current consensus and audience summary.
The individual reviews point to a clear divide: whether the visual spectacle and familiar game references are enough, or whether a viewer also wants a stronger story and character development.

- Roberto Tyler Ortiz of Geek Vibes Nation wrote that it was “very clearly made for fans of the Mario universe” and delivered on that level.
- Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter argued that “Adult non-aficionados will find little of interest other than the starry vocal cast.”
- Wilson Chapman of IndieWire criticized the planets as meticulously modeled on the games but lacking a sense of discovery.
Those are distinct critics’ judgments, not a formal survey of all viewers. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup collects the range of responses.
Is it mainly for Mario fans?
The early reviews suggest that familiarity with Mario may shape what a viewer gets from the film. Fans may find pleasure in recognizable worlds, references, animation and voice performances; viewers seeking an unusually layered plot or substantial character arcs may be less satisfied. The review roundup supports that interpretive distinction, but it does not quantify how different audiences respond.

Nintendo describes the film as an animated follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The official announcement identifies returning cast members Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. It credits Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, Matthew Fogel as screenwriter, and Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto as producers. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as PG, animation/adventure/comedy/family, with a runtime of 1 hour 38 minutes.

Release-date references differ by territory and source context. Nintendo’s movie page lists April 1, 2026 as the US theatrical date, while Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 announcement says April 3 for the US and many markets and April 24 for Japan. What is the useful takeaway?
The “Blue Shell” framing captures a sharp critic-score drop in the two-film animated comparison, but the number is only one part of the reception story. The critic score changed between the April 1 launch report and the October 7 Rotten Tomatoes snapshot, while the later audience score was substantially higher. Reviews suggest the central trade-off: vivid Mario-world spectacle and fan service versus a story some critics found thin. The ratings describe reactions, not a definitive measure of whether the film will work for a particular viewer.
