Yes. Netflix’s 2022 Australian film The Stranger is inspired by the investigation into the 2003 disappearance and murder of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe, and the covert police operation concerning Brett Peter Cowan. It is a dramatic film based on the investigation, not a verified scene-by-scene reconstruction of the case.
What real case inspired The Stranger?
Daniel James Morcombe was 13 when he was reported missing on 7 December 2003. The Queensland State Coroner’s findings describe the investigation into his disappearance and death, including a covert police operation concerning Brett Peter Cowan. The coroner characterized it as the largest criminal investigation in Queensland’s history—a judicial description of its scale, not a numerical statistic.
Cowan was convicted of Morcombe’s murder in 2014, according to the Queensland Courts summary of the inquest. The State Coroner, Terry Ryan, delivered the inquest findings on 5 April 2019. Read the coroner’s findings and the Queensland Courts inquest summary.
How does the film relate to the investigation?
Netflix describes The Stranger as based on a major Australian investigation and undercover operation. Its central premise draws on the covert operation concerning Cowan and the admissions that followed, which are discussed in the coroner’s findings.

The film is not proof that every character, exchange, or sequence corresponds directly to a real person or event. The official sources establish the case chronology and the existence of the operation, but they do not provide a scene-by-scene comparison with the film. It is most accurate to call the movie inspired by the investigation rather than a literal reconstruction.

Wright said he wanted to make “a psychological crime film that took audiences into a place that was hidden” and described his aim as combining authentic, realistic detail with an immersive cinematic experience. The statement appears in Netflix’s announcement about the film.

A secondary film reference identifies Kate Kyriacou’s The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe’s Killer as the source book. That connection is not established by the official court or Netflix sources cited here, so it is best treated as a reported book connection rather than a court-confirmed fact. The book offers a route to a fuller account of the undercover operation for readers who want more than the film’s dramatic perspective.

Where to draw the line between fact and drama
- Established by official records: Morcombe’s age and reported-missing date, the investigation, the covert operation concerning Cowan, Cowan’s 2014 conviction, and the date of the 2019 inquest findings.
- Established by Netflix: the film’s Australian identity, Wright’s writing and directing credit, named stars, global release date, and its connection to a real investigation.
- Not established by those sources: that each film scene, character portrayal, or line of dialogue maps directly onto a documented event or person.
