The Smashing Machine is worth watching for Dwayne Johnson’s absorbing portrayal of fighter Mark Kerr, though its restrained storytelling never quite gives the people around him the same dramatic force. Benny Safdie’s 2025 biographical drama is strongest when Johnson lets Kerr’s physical confidence and private fragility occupy the same frame; it is less effective when the film’s observational approach leaves emotional turns feeling underdeveloped.
What is The Smashing Machine about?
Safdie’s film follows real mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr through the no-holds-barred era of the UFC, placing his competitive life beside the strain of his relationships and his efforts to make sense of himself. Johnson plays Kerr; Emily Blunt plays Dawn Staples, his girlfriend, whose struggle to find a place in Kerr’s chaotic world is part of the story rather than a side note. The film’s premise and relationship focus are reflected in the Seven Bucks Productions synopsis.

Kerr’s credentials establish the scale of the public figure without reducing his career to a generic championship story. Seven Bucks lists him as a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, a World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner, a Pride FC heavyweight champion, the 1992 NCAA national wrestling champion, the 1994 National Freestyle Champion and a four-time ADCC World Submission Champion. Those distinctions matter: the UFC honors are tournament wins, not a single conventional title reign.
This is not the first work called The Smashing Machine. Seven Bucks also identifies a 2003 HBO documentary about Kerr’s career in Vale Tudo, UFC and Pride. The existence of that earlier documentary is established, but its current streaming or purchase availability is not.

Why is Dwayne Johnson’s performance the film’s center of gravity?
Johnson’s work is a physical transformation, but its value is not merely that he looks unlike his most familiar screen persona. As Kerr, he makes athletic size feel both commanding and vulnerable: a body trained to dominate can also register wear, uncertainty and the effort of holding composure. The performance’s most persuasive idea is that the fighter’s public presence does not cancel out the unsettled person inside it.
That tension gives the film its most compelling contrast. In competition, Kerr’s physicality is the obvious story; away from it, Johnson has to communicate the cost of living as if force and self-control can solve every problem. He does so with an inwardness that keeps the character from becoming a simple triumph narrative. At the September 2025 Venice press conference, Johnson said, “I have for a long time wanted this,” describing the desire for a transformative role; the Associated Press report places that remark in the context of his career ambitions.

The film’s attention to Kerr’s private life also gives Johnson space to play beyond the fighter’s public identity. The best passages are those in which posture, pauses and shifts in attention carry as much weight as dialogue. Johnson makes Kerr’s confidence and fragility feel connected rather than contradictory. That is why the performance rises above the movie’s limitations: it supplies a vivid inner life even when the screenplay does not fully develop the surrounding drama.
Does the restrained storytelling work?
Safdie resists the familiar sports-biopic machinery of cleanly staged setbacks, inspirational speeches and a climactic contest that resolves a life. The choice is defensible. Kerr’s story is not only about winning; its emotional terrain includes fame, addiction and recovery, and a relationship trying to survive the disorder around a career. TIME’s review of the film likewise notes Safdie’s avoidance of familiar Rocky-style formulas.

- The true story of legendary mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne Johnson), whose obsession with greatness made him a legend and nearly cost him everything. A portrait about ambition, sacrifice and the courage to fight for something greater than victory. SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted Scenes, Commentary with director Benny Safdie.
But avoiding formula is not the same as finding a stronger dramatic shape. At 123 minutes, the film can feel subdued without always feeling purposeful. Its scenes often observe Kerr rather than building pressure toward a clear emotional shift. That approach creates room for behavior and atmosphere, yet it also makes some transitions land softly: the audience can see that relationships and circumstances are changing without always feeling the accumulation that would make those changes hit harder.
Dawn is central to the film’s stated point of view, but the relationship does not always receive enough development to match its importance. Blunt brings presence to the role, and the premise understands that Kerr’s personal orbit has consequences for the people inside it. Still, the storytelling can keep the viewer at a remove, treating tension as something to witness more than a conflict the scene has fully sharpened. The result is a film that is more convincing as a portrait of a man’s contradictions than as a fully realized account of how those contradictions reshape a couple.
That imbalance is the film’s defining trade-off. Safdie’s observational manner helps it sidestep easy uplift and tidy moral lessons, but it sometimes drains scenes of dramatic momentum. The critics consensus displayed by Rotten Tomatoes captures a similar tension, praising Johnson’s transformation while saying the film avoids cliché “even at the expense of narrative satisfaction.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the film present Kerr’s real-life story?
The movie draws on a real athlete and a recognizable period in mixed martial arts, but it is a dramatic feature, not a documentary record. Its focus is selective: the fight career supplies context, while Kerr’s identity, relationships and vulnerability provide the emotional subject. Treat the film as an interpretation of a life, not a complete chronology of every achievement or event.

The production details reinforce its deliberate, controlled approach. La Biennale di Venezia lists a 123-minute runtime and credits Safdie as writer, director and editor, Maceo Bishop as cinematographer, and Nala Sinephro for the music. Safdie’s director statement there offers a compact key to the film’s interest in vulnerability: “Our heroes bleed just like everyone else.” The Venice Biennale listing also identifies the film as an English-language U.S. production.
Is The Smashing Machine worth watching?
Yes, if you are drawn to performance-led sports dramas and are willing to accept a film more interested in lived-in observation than conventional narrative payoff. Johnson gives Kerr a persuasive physical and emotional presence, and Safdie’s refusal to turn the fighter’s life into a straightforward victory story is often a strength. The qualification is substantial: viewers looking for a tightly shaped arc, a fully developed relationship drama or the propulsion of a traditional fight film may find the storytelling too muted.
For documentary viewers, the distinction is useful: the 2025 film is a scripted biographical drama, while the 2003 HBO work identified by Seven Bucks is a separate documentary. A24 lists the 2025 film and its Blu-ray edition, along with viewing options, on its official film page.
