These four are worthwhile discoveries for different reasons, and the order is an editorial guide rather than a consensus ranking. It weighs tone, ease of entry, and what English-language readers can currently find in publisher catalogs.
How this ranking works
The selection favors series with a distinctive premise and a clear reader fit. Completion and catalog size matter when the publisher states them; neither is a proxy for quality or popularity. A Sno-Isle Libraries list uses the phrase “Hidden Gems Manga List,” but that discovery framing does not prove any title is obscure.
1. Girls’ Last Tour: for a quiet, contemplative journey
Chito and Yuuri travel through the remains of a ruined city in Tsukumizu’s post-apocalyptic series. Its appeal is less about a race to save the world than the atmosphere of moving through a vast, emptied place with two companions. It is a strong pick for readers who want reflective science fiction rather than nonstop action.
Yen Press lists six English volumes, and its Volume 6 description refers to the final leg of the pair’s journey. Girls’ Last Tour, Volume 1 is the publisher-listed entry point. [c_girls]

2. Golden Kamuy: for a completed frontier adventure
VIZ’s premise follows Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran searching for hidden gold in Hokkaido, and an Ainu girl amid the pursuit by other treasure seekers. The setup makes this a good choice if you want a sprawling adventure with a definite endpoint rather than an ongoing series.
VIZ labels Volume 31 the final volume and says the story concludes there. Start with Golden Kamuy, Volume 1; readers continuing through the series can find the ending in Volume 31. [c_golden]
3. Witch Hat Atelier: for imaginative fantasy and a drawn magic system
In Kamome Shirahama’s fantasy, Coco longs to become a witch despite a world where people believe magicians are born with magic. That premise gives the story an accessible starting point, while its illustrated magic and detailed setting reward readers who enjoy lingering over how a fantasy world works.
Kodansha’s current series catalog lists print and digital editions and displays 14 available volumes; the series is marked ongoing, not complete. Witch Hat Atelier, Volume 1 is a clear print starting point on Kodansha’s series page. [c_witch]
Rank #3
- MHA Fandom: Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.
- Includes: The first 20 volumes of the bestselling My Hero Academia manga.
- Format: Softcover, 3840 pages.
4. Dorohedoro: for readers who want grotesque, violent dark fantasy
Q Hayashida’s story begins in the Hole, where sorcerers experiment on residents. Caiman, whose head has been turned into that of a reptile and who has lost his memory, teams up with Nikaido to find the sorcerer responsible. The premise is strange, grimy, and graphic; readers looking for gentle fantasy should choose another title on this list.
VIZ lists Dorohedoro, Volume 1 as the series debut. [c_doro]
