In The Rookie Season 8, Episode 9, Nyla Harper’s new partnership with rookie Miles Penn makes the more compelling story than the episode’s Game Changer crossover cameo. The cameo, featuring Sam Reich, provides a goofy comedy detour; Nyla and Miles have the stronger potential to shape what comes next.

Why Nyla and Miles make the episode’s strongest pairing

After inappropriate conduct involving serial killer Liam Glasser costs Nyla her detective position, she returns to patrol and is assigned to train Miles Penn. Miles has also recently faced department discipline, giving the two officers an uneasy point of common ground.

Their first assignment turns that tension into comedy: Nyla asks Miles to act as the training officer and guide her as though she were the rookie. The role reversal gives the partnership an immediate, distinctive shape, rather than treating it as a routine trainer-and-trainee setup.

The case they work involves two wounded women connected to a bank robbery. One suspect says student-loan debt of more than $200,000 helped drive the crime; the investigation then points to the older woman’s grandmother as the planner, with a bank-robbery history going back to 1983. Those are plot details, not broader claims about student debt or crime. Reviewer Erin Konrad finds this case and the Nyla–Miles dynamic especially engaging, and sees the partnership as a thread worth continuing.

What happens in the Game Changer crossover?

John Nolan and Celina Juarez investigate what appears to be a robbery involving an improv comedy group. A wallet left at the scene helps move the investigation forward, though it belongs to an innocent man. Sam Reich appears as a character who staged a fake robbery for Game Changer that turns into a real one.

The crossover is a comic aside rather than the episode’s main character development. Konrad says the scenes remain silly and fun even for viewers who have not seen Game Changer, crediting the cast’s commitment to the bit. In that sense, the cameo works as accessible comic relief, while Nyla and Miles offer the more promising ongoing story.

How the other storylines fit

The episode also follows an investigation into two people accidentally glued together, which uncovers ghost-gun production. Konrad considers this additional case unnecessary to the episode’s larger narrative, a sign that the hour’s separate police plots do not all carry equal weight.

In the relationship threads, Lucy Chen challenges Tim Bradford over his silence in a group chat with his mother. Wade Grey suspects his wife, Luna, may have feelings for doctor Oliver Ashton. Luna tells Wade that nothing has happened, while admitting that she does have feelings for Oliver. The episode closes with John Nolan comforting Wade, and Bailey briefly returns from Washington, D.C.

The review’s verdict

Konrad’s assessment is that the episode balances fresh pairings with uncertainty in established relationships, but not every subplot earns its place. The Game Changer appearance supplies a self-contained laugh; Nyla’s return to patrol and her unconventional start with Miles are the more substantial hook for viewers interested in the show’s continuing character dynamics. This is the reviewer’s interpretation, not an official episode guide or an announcement about future storylines.
