The Return Review: Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche Ground the Odyssey in Grief

Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche anchor Uberto Pasolini’s austere Odyssey adaptation, a family drama whose psychological intimacy trades epic spectacle for restraint.

Uberto Pasolini’s The Return is a restrained drama about the final stretch of Homer’s Odyssey, not a sweeping retelling of the whole epic. Ralph Fiennes plays Odysseus as a man damaged by war; Juliette Binoche’s Penelope and Charlie Plummer’s Telemachus have spent years surviving his absence. The film’s intimacy can make this familiar homecoming feel newly human, though viewers seeking gods, monsters and a cathartic spectacle may find its deliberate quietness limiting.

What is The Return about?

After twenty years away, Odysseus reaches Ithaca in disguise. Penelope faces pressure from suitors, while Telemachus is in danger. The film adapts the homecoming portion of the Odyssey, narrowing its attention to a family confronting what war and prolonged absence have done to them.

Directed by Uberto Pasolini and written by Pasolini, John Collee and Edward Bond, the English-language drama runs 116 minutes, according to Modern Films and the BBFC. Apple TV lists its edition at 1 hour 55 minutes. Modern Films identifies Greece, Italy and France as production countries; Apple TV’s regions-of-origin listing also includes the United States and United Kingdom, so the listings do not give identical country descriptions.

How does this version of the Odyssey differ from an epic adventure?

Pasolini sets aside an effects-led parade of mythic trials in favor of psychological realism. The story’s scale contracts to natural settings and the palace, where recognition, trust and the strain between husband, wife and son carry the drama. The emphasis is less on the legendary hero’s exploits than on the human cost of returning from war.

The Odyssey: The Real Story
  • Blending myth, fate, and human resilience, this doc explores how one man's journey becomes the ultimate story of endurance, identity, and homecoming.

That focus makes the familiar myth feel domestic and immediate: Ithaca is not simply a prize to reclaim, but a home whose people have changed during Odysseus’s absence. The trade-off is a smaller sense of wonder. Viewers who want gods, monsters and expansive adventure should not expect this film to provide the same experience as a spectacle-driven Odyssey.

What do Fiennes and Binoche bring to the film?

Fiennes and Binoche form the emotional center, with Plummer’s Telemachus completing the tense family triangle. The Los Angeles Times praises the lead performances and finds understated depth in the film’s treatment of grief. Time Out also singles out Fiennes. Their scenes together make the story’s central question—whether people can resume a life altered by absence—more consequential than a simple reunion.

Fiennes has spoken of a long-standing interest in the character. In an Associated Press interview, he said, “I’ve been fascinated by Odysseus since I was a young boy and my mother read me the Greek myths.” That interest is reflected in a portrayal concerned with what it means to come home and reclaim a place, rather than simply display heroic strength.

Is The Return worth watching?

The critical divide follows the film’s defining choice. The Los Angeles Times sees an understated profundity in its performances and grief, while noting that the drama remains in a limited register rather than reaching operatic heights. Time Out calls it handsome but dour, praises Fiennes and argues that the ending’s violence lacks cathartic force.

Those responses point to a matter of taste more than a single verdict. If you value performance, psychological intimacy and a grounded look at war’s effect on a family, the restraint may be the film’s strength. If you want a more expansive mythic canvas or an action-led climax, its austerity may feel like a missed opportunity.

Where and when was it released?

The Los Angeles Times reported a wide U.S. release on December 6, 2024. Time Out listed its UK and Ireland cinema release as April 11, 2025. For streaming or rental, BFI Player has a rental page and Apple TV has a U.S. title listing; access and current terms depend on territory and may change, so check the local service listing.
