There are multiple Durins because Durin was both the name of the Longbeards’ ancestral father and a name given to five later heirs who were said to resemble him. The Rings of Power adapts that tradition into a family story focused on King Durin III, his son Prince Durin IV, and Princess Disa. Its portrayal of a Dwarven Ring’s influence is a television choice, not a one-to-one account of Tolkien’s ring lore.
Why are there multiple Durins?
In Tolkien’s account of the Longbeards, Durin was the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and the ancestor of the kings of Durin’s line. He was associated with Khazad-dûm, the great Dwarven city later known as Moria.
The name recurred among his descendants. Tolkien says that five heirs in Durin’s House so closely resembled the original Durin that they were given his name. The Dwarves believed that Durin the Deathless had returned. That is their belief within the legendarium, not a definitive explanation that every later Durin was literally the same person.
Who are Durin III, Durin IV, and Disa in the series?
The Rings of Power places King Durin III, Prince Durin IV, and Princess Disa at the center of its Khazad-dûm storyline. Amazon identifies Peter Mullan as Durin III, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, and Sophia Nomvete as Disa in its official trailer and series cast listing. The show makes Durin IV the king’s son and heir, shaping the repeated name into an immediate family conflict.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep that screen relationship distinct from Tolkien’s brief account of the naming tradition. Appendix A establishes why the name recurs, but it is not a complete numbered family tree for every Durin. Secondary genealogies can help orient readers, but the safest explanation of the source tradition is that later heirs were named for their resemblance to the ancestor.
What does Durin III’s ring do in the show?
The series makes a Dwarven Ring part of Durin III’s personal and political story. The official Season 2 episode listing says Durin grows suspicious of the Dwarven Rings. A 2024 TIME comparison of the show and Tolkien’s books describes the show’s Durin III as becoming greedier and more obstinate while wearing his ring. These visible effects belong to the adaptation.

How does the show’s ring story differ from Tolkien’s?
Tolkien’s ring tradition does not describe Dwarves as easily controlled by the Rings of Power. The Dwarves resist domination, although the rings are associated with increased wealth-seeking and greed. The Seven are tied to Dwarven lords; the Ring of Thrór is especially connected with Durin’s line. Accounts of how the rings passed into Dwarven hands are not entirely consistent: one tradition says Celebrimbor gave a ring to Durin III, while another says Celebrimbor surrendered the Seven to Sauron. Tolkien Gateway’s overview of the Seven Rings summarizes this lore.
The show turns that more distant book association into a direct dramatic influence on a king and his household. It also rearranges events for a Second Age story. Later book lore about Dwarven hoards, dragons destroying four rings, and Sauron recovering others should not be treated as a scene-by-scene forecast of the show’s timeline.

What to keep separate when following the Dwarven story
- The name: Durin begins as the ancestral figure of the Longbeards; later heirs receive his name because they resemble him.
- The family drama: the series presents Durin III as king and Durin IV as his son and heir, with Disa as a central figure in the royal household.
- The ring: Tolkien’s tradition emphasizes Dwarves’ resistance to domination alongside the rings’ association with greed; the adaptation makes the effects immediate and personal.
- The chronology: the television story adapts Second Age events, so familiar names do not mean every relationship or plot detail follows the books exactly.
For the original account, look to Appendix A, “Durin’s Folk,” in The Lord of the Rings. Amazon’s season page lists the first two seasons, though streaming catalogs vary by territory and may change.
