Kill! Kill!; for his most audacious collision of Hollywood satire and pop excess, choose Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. This ranking is a critical judgment, not a consensus list. It weighs visual control and editing, narrative drive and tonal command, cultural reach and later reappraisal, how distinctly each film represents a phase of Meyer’s career, and how well it works as an introduction to his cinema.
The American Film Institute’s catalog indexes 22 titles in Meyer’s filmography, a count specific to that catalog rather than a claim to include every short, unfinished, or peripheral work. The films below show why his body of work resists a single label: it ranges across exploitation cinema, action, comedy, and knowingly heightened Hollywood parody.
10. Vixen!
Vixen! belongs on a Meyer starter list because it makes his place in exploitation cinema hard to ignore. Its value here is less as the most balanced introduction than as a marker of a provocative phase in his career. The University Press of Mississippi includes it alongside Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls in a representative selection of Meyer’s work, not as a ranking.
9. Up!
Up! earns a place for readers interested in Meyer at his most deliberately outrageous. Its appeal is the clash between an eccentric, heightened premise and the director’s hard-edged visual approach. It is a less natural first choice than the best-known titles higher on this list, but it helps show the range of tone within his career.

8. Supervixens
Supervixens is a useful pick for viewers drawn to Meyer’s unruly, high-energy side. It prioritizes momentum and excess over a restrained, conventional narrative shape. That makes it vivid as an example of his sensibility, though not necessarily the clearest introduction for someone who wants a more controlled story.
7. Motorpsycho
Motorpsycho stands out as a crime-and-revenge entry in Meyer’s filmography. Its place here reflects the force of its genre drive and its value as a contrast to his more famous ensemble films. It shows that his work was not confined to one recurring setup, even when the same appetite for sharp images and heightened confrontation remains recognizable.

6. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
Three go-go dancers crossing the desert gives Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! an immediate engine: movement, conflict, and a stark landscape. Meyer’s visual control and cutting make it feel lean and deliberate rather than merely sensational, which is why it is one of the strongest entry points into his action-driven cinema. BFI’s film record lists the picture as a 1966 US production, directed and produced by Meyer, written by Jack Moran, and featuring Tura Satana, Haji, and Stuart Lancaster.
There is a source-specific dating wrinkle: a BFI Southbank event page describes its presentation as USA 1965 and gives a running time of 83 minutes, while BFI’s film record dates the film to 1966. Those records should not be silently conflated. BFI Southbank’s program description also says the film’s status, particularly among feminist critics, “has drastically changed over the years, with many now reappraising its virtues.” That is the event copy’s account of changing reception, not a quantified survey.

5. The Seven Minutes
The Seven Minutes is a valuable counterpoint to Meyer’s more flamboyant reputation: it puts a courtroom and censorship controversy at the center of the story. The shift in setting and subject makes it one of the more distinctive choices for viewers who want to see how he handled a sustained dramatic argument. It ranks below the more formally singular films here because its appeal depends more on that subject and less on the concentrated visual identity of his best-known work.
4. Lorna
Lorna represents an earlier, more compact strand of Meyer’s filmmaking. Its relatively direct dramatic frame makes it a revealing comparison with the expansive, self-aware spectacle of his later work. For a newcomer, it is a worthwhile second or third film rather than the ideal opener: its historical and career context adds to the experience.

3. Common Law Cabin
Common Law Cabin brings together a confined setting, sharply drawn clashes, and Meyer’s taste for heightened performance. It works well as a bridge between the compactness of his earlier films and the more sprawling excess of his later pictures. Its strong sense of place and confrontation gives it an edge over the titles below it, even if it has not reached the cultural profile of his two highest-ranked films.

Directed and produced by Meyer and written by Roger Ebert, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is a singular Hollywood satire: a pop-culture spectacle that gleefully turns melodrama and celebrity excess up to an absurd pitch. Dolly Read, John La Zar, and Cynthia Myers are among the cast listed by BFI. Its scale and tonal audacity make it the strongest choice here for viewers who want Meyer’s most conspicuous collision of industry parody and exploitation sensibility.

1. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
It may be the most obvious choice, but it is also the most complete introduction to Meyer’s distinctive strengths: graphic visual composition, forceful editing, a spare action premise, and a world that feels stylized from the first scene. Its desert-crossing setup creates constant narrative motion, while the performances and confrontations give it a memorable personality. It captures Meyer’s cinema in concentrated form without requiring a viewer to know the history of exploitation film first.
The film’s later reappraisal also makes it a rewarding starting point for discussion, not just a cult-title recommendation. BFI Southbank’s event description notes changing critical attitudes, especially among feminist critics; that phrasing belongs to the BFI program copy and should be read as an observation, not a measured consensus.
Quick Recap
How to choose your first Russ Meyer film

- For Hollywood satire: Choose Beyond the Valley of the Dolls for a more expansive, self-conscious burst of pop spectacle.
- For an early-career contrast: Add Lorna or Motorpsycho after one of the signature titles, then compare their more compact genre frames with Meyer’s later excess.
- For a guide to the wider filmography: AFI Catalog’s Russ Meyer entry indexes 22 titles.
