The trailer for The Return introduces a grounded retelling of The Odyssey, directed by Uberto Pasolini and led by Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus and Juliette Binoche as Penelope. After twenty years away, Odysseus returns to Ithaca to find his household changed and his family under threat. Fiennes and Binoche reunite onscreen after their earlier work together in The English Patient.
What the The Return trailer sets up
The official synopsis centers on Odysseus’s return to Ithaca after two decades away. Bleecker Street describes him as scarred and changed by war; Penelope faces suitors pressing their claims to the kingship, and their son Telemachus is in danger. Those stakes make the homecoming—not a tour through every episode of the ancient epic—the film’s central dramatic frame. Bleecker Street’s film page provides the US distributor’s synopsis and trailer link.
The available official descriptions establish the premise and family conflict, but not a complete shot-by-shot account of the trailer. It is more accurate to describe the story the trailer introduces than to attribute particular dialogue or images to it.
Why Fiennes and Binoche are reuniting
Fiennes and Binoche previously appeared together in The English Patient. In a December 5, 2024 interview with The Associated Press, they discussed the trust and respect behind their renewed collaboration. Fiennes described their relationship simply: “We’re very, very, very good friends.” The AP interview also reports that Pasolini worked on the project on and off for about 30 years. Who plays Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus?
- Ralph Fiennes plays Odysseus, the returning king.
- Juliette Binoche plays Penelope, confronting pressure from suitors in her husband’s absence.
- Charlie Plummer plays Telemachus, whose safety is at risk.
Fiennes told the AP that the actors’ task was to make the mythic characters human: “Our job is to make them human.” That emphasis fits the film’s focus on what war and a long absence have done to a family.
Is The Return based on The Odyssey?
Yes. It is a retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey, focused on Odysseus’s return to Ithaca and the danger and uncertainty waiting at home. The available descriptions frame it as a drama about homecoming and its human consequences, rather than a comprehensive screen version of every episode in the epic. CBS’s December 3, 2024 interview listing also identifies the film as a retelling of Homer’s work. See the CBS interview listing.

The central question is what remains of home after twenty years of absence. Odysseus must face a changed political and domestic world, while Penelope and Telemachus have had to live with the consequences of his long disappearance. Viewers seeking the complete sequence of Homer’s adventures should turn to the epic itself; the film’s stated focus is the return and the family conflict it brings into view.
