Justin Kurzel’s The Order turns a 1983 FBI investigation into a controlled, tense pursuit between Jude Law’s agent Terry Husk and Nicholas Hoult’s white-supremacist militant Bob Mathews. The performances give the film a compelling dramatic center; its procedural momentum is stronger than its exploration of the history behind the violence. The result is an effective period crime thriller whose contemporary warning is clearest when it stays grounded in the specific events it depicts.
What is The Order about?
Set in the Pacific Northwest in 1983, the film follows FBI agent Terry Husk as he investigates a wave of robberies and the domestic terrorist group behind them. The Venice Biennale’s official synopsis describes the group as plotting a war against the U.S. federal government. How do Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult shape the film?
Law plays Husk as an agent whose investigation feels like work rather than a puzzle designed for a hero. He brings authority to the pursuit, but also a sense of wear and accumulated strain that keeps the procedural from becoming purely mechanical. Hoult’s Mathews is colder and less readable. The contrast between Law’s grounded persistence and Hoult’s contained menace supplies the film with its most sustained dramatic tension.

Jonathan Romney’s review for The Guardian likewise singles out Law’s commanding performance and Hoult’s icy presence, describing the film as unusually dynamic. That pairing is more persuasive than a simple good-versus-evil duel: the film’s tension comes from watching an investigator try to make sense of a movement whose violence is not reducible to one criminal’s personality. Does the procedural pursuit make the history compelling?
Kurzel gives the investigation a deliberate, old-school shape. The film builds suspense through the work of tracing crimes, piecing together connections and narrowing the distance between Husk and Mathews. That clarity is a strength: the audience can follow the pursuit without needing a primer on every organization and political claim surrounding it.

It is also the film’s main limitation. The mechanics of the investigation are more fully dramatized than the historical and ideological complexity behind the group. The period crime-thriller form makes the chase legible, but at times the historical material can feel like context around the suspense rather than a subject the film fully examines. For viewers drawn to procedural momentum, that balance works; those looking for a more expansive account of domestic extremism may find the film’s focus narrow.
What does the 1970s crime-film style add?
The film’s controlled atmosphere and methodical pursuit invite comparison with 1970s crime cinema. Kurzel himself described that lineage to the Associated Press: “It just reminded me of the great old heist films from the ‘70s, with a Sidney Lumet, William Friedkin kind of feel about it,” he said. “Even though it’s a period film, it’s so incredibly present and sort of dangerously still relevant.” The Associated Press interview

The comparison helps explain the film’s emphasis on controlled tension and the practical business of a pursuit. The assignment’s “Michael Mann-esque” label is best treated as a description of the crime-thriller mood, not a verified claim that Mann influenced Kurzel. The documented comparison is Kurzel’s own reference to Lumet and Friedkin.
How does the film connect its history to the present?
Kurzel’s Venice director’s statement explicitly connects the subject to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol and frames the story as a warning about division. The film is most convincing when that warning emerges from the investigation and the characters’ conduct, rather than from an assumed one-to-one parallel. Its historical setting matters: the story concerns a particular group, period and campaign of violence. The present-day resonance sharpens the stakes, but does not erase those distinctions.

Is The Order worth watching?
For viewers who want a tense investigation anchored by a strong Law–Hoult contrast, The Order is a compelling watch. It is less comprehensive as a history of the movement it depicts: its procedural craft carries the story more forcefully than its examination of ideology. The film’s haunting effect comes from holding those two qualities together—a pursuit that is gripping, and a warning whose historical specificity should not be flattened into a slogan.
