This ranking follows WWE’s published list, with its displayed order retained and its numbering corrected. WWE published that editorial ranking on August 29, 2014; it is not an objective consensus or a current official ranking of Cena’s entire career.
How this ranking works
WWE’s 2014 article supplies the order, while the comparisons below explain what makes each rivalry distinctive. Useful criteria include how often the feud returned, the stakes of its matches, its impact on Cena’s character or career, the variety of its conflicts, and whether it had a clear beginning and payoff. Those are editorial lenses, not measured ratings.
The source page displays ten entries but misnumbers some of them: it labels both Triple H and Kurt Angle number 9 and omits number 8. The list below repairs the sequence according to the displayed order; it does not claim to recover WWE’s intended numbering logic. One further wrinkle is that AJ Styles appears in the page despite the article’s 2014 publication date, so his placement is presented as part of the page’s displayed list, not as evidence that the entry was included in the original 2014 version.
John Cena’s 10 greatest WWE rivalries
1. Randy Orton: the long-running peer rivalry
Orton ranks first for longevity and repeated championship stakes. WWE connects the two men through their Ohio Valley Wrestling development and 2002 debuts, then points to major clashes including SummerSlam 2007, their 2009 “I Quit” match, and the 2013 TLC match for the first WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The rivalry’s appeal was the sense that two stars from the same generation kept competing to define it.

2. Edge: the feud that turned personal
Edge’s cash-in of the Money in the Bank contract at New Year’s Revolution 2006 took Cena’s title and set off a conflict that moved beyond championship competition. WWE highlights the Long Island Sound brawl and Edge’s intrusion into Cena’s childhood home as moments that raised the personal stakes. The rivalry stands out for how aggressively it blurred the line between a title feud and a personal vendetta.
3. Brock Lesnar: resilience against force
WWE frames Cena and Lesnar as a contrast between Cena’s resilience and Lesnar’s physical dominance. Their history reaches back to early meetings in 2002–03, before the later headline matches. The 2012 Extreme Rules encounter brought them back together, and Lesnar’s 16 German suplexes against Cena at SummerSlam 2014 became a striking image of the size of the challenge Cena faced.

4. Batista: a star rejects the shadow
In WWE’s telling, the 2010 feud grew from Batista’s frustration at living in Cena’s shadow. Batista won the title, but Cena answered with a victory at WrestleMania XXVI. Their escalation continued through a Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules and an “I Quit” match at Over the Limit. The rivalry gave Cena a direct, high-stakes opponent whose grievance was tied to his own standing in the company.
5. The Rock: a generational WrestleMania story
The Rock rivalry was built across three years, from his 2011 return to two consecutive WrestleMania main events. The Rock won their first match at WrestleMania XXVIII; Cena won the rematch and the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29. Its defining ingredients were the clash of two generations of stars, the promotional exchanges, and a clear two-match payoff.

6. CM Punk: a fight over who represented WWE’s future
Punk’s “pipe bomb” and challenge to Cena’s position as the company’s leading star gave this rivalry an ideological edge. Punk’s 2011 WWE Championship victory made the argument concrete: the conflict was not only about who could beat Cena, but about who should stand for the future of professional wrestling. That status-and-identity tension distinguishes the feud from rivalries driven primarily by personal animosity or physical contrast.
7. The WWE Universe: a rivalry with the audience
This entry is different in kind from the others. WWE describes Cena’s polarized relationship with fans: he drew sustained boos while continuing to show support for both his admirers and his detractors. It is not a wrestler-versus-wrestler feud, but it captures a persistent question around Cena’s career: how a central company star could remain divisive and still command the audience’s attention.

8. Triple H: business and championship stakes
WWE writer Kevin Powers characterized the rivalry this way: “The rivalry between John Cena and Triple H has never been too personal. It’s always been about business — and the WWE Championship.” The high-profile matches included WrestleMania 22, a rematch at Backlash the following month, and the triple threat at WrestleMania XXIV with Randy Orton. That business-first framing makes the feud a useful counterpoint to Edge’s personal escalation.
9. Kurt Angle: the formative test
WWE traces the rivalry to Angle’s open challenge and Cena’s “ruthless aggression” response. Angle then became a demanding opponent for the young Cena. WWE also credits Angle’s Ankle Lock with influencing Cena’s adoption of the STF. Their final singles match was a First Blood match on Raw in early 2006, giving the rivalry a defined endpoint as Cena’s career moved into a new phase.

10. AJ Styles: a later-career technical rivalry
The Styles entry represents a later stage of Cena’s career and, because of its chronology, should be read as part of the WWE page as it is currently displayed rather than assumed to have appeared in the original 2014 article. WWE describes a rivalry lasting less than a year, involving singles matches, a six-man tag, and a triple threat. Cena defeated Styles at the Royal Rumble to tie the world-title record at 16 at that time. The pairing added a technical, in-ring dimension to Cena’s later rivalries.

The strongest rivalries here succeed for different reasons rather than following one formula. Orton’s is the clearest choice for recurrence and peer competition; Edge’s for personal escalation; Rock’s for generational spectacle and a two-WrestleMania arc; Angle’s for Cena’s formative years; Punk’s for a dispute over identity and status; and Lesnar’s for the contrast between resilience and overwhelming power. Together, they show how Cena’s opponents could test his position, his character, or the audience’s relationship with him.
Why this is a historical ranking, not a complete career list
WWE’s ranking was published in 2014, before the final years of Cena’s in-ring career. WWE’s profile, crawled in October 2026, records that he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025 and later career developments, including his 17th world title at WrestleMania 41. Those milestones establish that the 2014 list cannot represent every rivalry or development from his full career. WWE has not supplied a newer ranking in the sources cited here, so this article does not present one as official.
