For the 2024 film Wicked: Part I, the most memorable quote-moments are the ones that reveal Elphaba and Glinda changing each other—not just the ones built for a big singalong. This ranking balances recognizability, character, theme, scene context, and how well each moment stands alone. It is an editorial selection, not a measured popularity chart.
A note on wording: The official sources cited for the film identify its songs and creative credits but do not provide a complete film transcript. To avoid presenting unverified lyrics as exact quotations, the entries below describe the memorable line or idea rather than reproduce it verbatim. The scope is the first film, not the full stage musical or the wider Wicked story.
10. Elphaba imagines a life changed by the Wizard
“The Wizard and I”
After Madame Morrible recognizes Elphaba’s magical ability, Elphaba pictures what meeting the Wizard could mean for her future. The moment matters because hope arrives before she knows how much power—and danger—is wrapped up in the Wizard’s approval. It is less a general wish for success than a glimpse of someone who has spent her life being treated as different, daring to imagine that difference might finally be welcomed.
Stephen Schwartz’s score and the film’s expanded fantastical treatment give the number room to express the scale of that hope. It earns a place here for showing Elphaba before disillusionment hardens into defiance.

9. Glinda turns social confidence into a comic lesson
“Popular”
Glinda offers to help Elphaba become popular, treating social acceptance as something she can teach. The joke is that Glinda’s confidence is both genuine and revealing: she knows how to perform likability, but she has not yet grasped how little that performance can solve for Elphaba.
Schwartz has described wanting the number to evoke high-school cheerleaders while avoiding straightforward bubblegum-pop rhythms. Ariana Grande performs it as Glinda in the film. The scene works as comedy, but its sharper point is the gap between Glinda’s easy social fluency and Elphaba’s experience of being judged before she speaks.
8. Two reluctant roommates discover a shared language of dislike
“What Is This Feeling?”
Elphaba and Glinda begin as roommates who cannot stand one another. The song makes that mutual irritation a theatrical joke, turning the awkwardness of forced proximity into a fast, high-energy number. Its appeal is not that the characters are secretly friends already; it is that their antagonism gives their later closeness somewhere meaningful to travel.
Schwartz has said Winnie Holzman proposed the premise of a “falling in hate” song. He recounted that an earlier version did not work, then recognized that the idea needed a high-energy treatment. That writing history fits the finished scene: the comic momentum makes their hostility entertaining without pretending it is kindness.

7. Fiyero treats seriousness as something to dance past
“Dancing Through Life”
Fiyero arrives with a relaxed philosophy and draws students toward the Ozdust Ballroom. On the surface, the number offers a carefree escape from effort and worry. Dramatically, though, it becomes a turning point: music and movement help shift the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, culminating in their dance together.
That contrast gives the song more weight than its breezy outlook suggests. Fiyero may want to drift past difficult questions, but the ballroom makes a connection possible that neither Elphaba nor Glinda could have reached through argument alone.
6. Elphaba and Glinda take in the Emerald City
“One Short Day”
The visit to the Emerald City begins as a whirlwind tourist day: a chance for Elphaba and Glinda to see the place they have imagined. The film expands the sequence beyond sightseeing, adding history about Oz and the Grimmerie while also showing how the Wizard’s world shapes what people are told.
That expansion makes the number a useful hinge between wonder and suspicion. The city’s spectacle is part of its appeal, but the film also asks viewers to notice the story being sold along with it.

5. Elphaba’s friendship with Glinda becomes the point
The changing bond at the heart of the story
The most affecting words between Elphaba and Glinda are not necessarily a single isolated line. Their story begins in rivalry and grows into an unlikely friendship, so the meaning of their exchanges changes as they learn how the other sees the world. A playful offer, a moment of embarrassment, or a gesture of support can carry more than it did earlier because the relationship has moved.
This is why the film’s quieter interpersonal moments belong in a ranking of its best quote-moments, even beside its showier songs. Wicked is interested in the distance between how people are labeled and who they become to one another.
4. “Wicked” becomes a label rather than a simple verdict
The story’s central reversal
The film reframes Oz through Elphaba and Glinda, whose public identities are set against one another as “wicked” and “good.” The contrast is memorable because the story keeps asking who gets to assign those labels, and whether a reputation tells the truth about a person.
Elphaba is smart, misunderstood, and born with emerald-green skin. Those facts shape how others respond to her long before the world’s account of her becomes fixed. The title idea works as a quote-moment because it carries the film’s central tension in one word: a judgment can be repeated until it sounds like a fact.

3. Elphaba chooses resistance after the Wizard’s betrayal
The decision that leads into the finale
Near the end of the film, Elphaba learns that the Wizard’s promises cannot be separated from his use of power. Her response is not simply disappointment at a failed dream; it is a decision to resist rather than accept the role offered to her.
That change gives the climax its moral force. The story has already shown how easily people can be defined by appearance and rumor; now Elphaba must decide what she will do when the authority she hoped would welcome her proves unworthy of that trust.

A comic moment with an emotional afterlife
The song’s central promise—that social technique can make Elphaba popular—is funny because Glinda delivers it with complete conviction. It also becomes more poignant as the film develops: being accepted on someone else’s terms is not the same as being understood.
That double meaning is why the number lasts beyond its jokes. Glinda is not merely mocking Elphaba; she is offering the kind of help she knows how to give. Their difference in perspective makes the scene comic now and more revealing in retrospect.

1. Elphaba claims the power the world fears
“Defying Gravity”
The Act One closer follows the Wizard’s betrayal and Elphaba’s decision to resist. Its defining moment is Elphaba taking ownership of her power rather than waiting for the Wizard or anyone else to authorize it. The image of rising above the ground is both a physical spectacle and a change in how she understands herself.
Schwartz described wanting the audience to feel power rising through Elphaba and then see her own it. That context makes the number more than a generic empowerment anthem: it is the payoff to a specific choice, made after Elphaba sees what the Wizard’s welcome actually costs.
How this ranking was chosen
The positions weigh four things: how clearly a moment is associated with the film, what it reveals about Elphaba or Glinda, how strongly it connects to the story’s themes of identity and reputation, and how much context helps it land. The list includes comic, intimate, and climactic scenes rather than treating one song as the whole film. The official film song list includes “Popular,” “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard and I,” “What Is This Feeling?,” “One Short Day,” and “Defying Gravity”; the ranking and the added relationship moments are editorial judgments, not an official or statistically established top ten.
Which version of Wicked is this?
This list covers the 2024 film Wicked: Part I, which adapts and expands Act One of the Broadway musical. The stage show includes additional songs and story beyond this first installment, so a ranking of its quotes would not be identical. Stephen Schwartz is credited as composer and lyricist; the film screenplay is credited to Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.
