In Season 2, Episode 4 of The Old Man, Dan Chase and Harold Harper try to persuade Morgan Bote to help Emily. Zoe McDonald’s return then makes clear that the conflict is larger than they understood. FX labels the episode “XI”; it aired September 26, 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
What happens in “Friends and Enemies in High Places”?
FX’s official synopsis for the episode reads: “Chase and Harper try to convince Morgan Bote to help Emily, but when Zoe McDonald resurfaces, they realize the story’s much bigger than they thought.” That is the episode’s central turn: the men seek help for Emily, and Zoe’s reappearance changes how they see the situation.
FX’s selected-scenes page also lists a clip titled “Dan and Harold Discuss Emily’s Shocking Actions.” The title confirms that the episode includes a discussion of Emily’s actions, but it does not establish the full scene or its context.
Why Morgan Bote matters to the episode
Chase and Harper’s effort to convince Morgan Bote to help Emily is the episode’s concrete objective. The official synopsis identifies Bote as the person they approach, but does not specify what help they request or how he responds. The available episode summary therefore supports the appeal itself, not a more detailed account of its outcome.

What Zoe’s return changes
Zoe McDonald’s reappearance is the episode’s key complication. FX says that after she resurfaces, Chase and Harper realize the story is “much bigger than they thought.” The synopsis does not explain the new information behind that realization, so the significance is best stated at that level rather than filled in with unverified plot details.
How the episode fits the season
Season 2 follows Chase, a former CIA agent, and Harper, a former FBI assistant director, as they try to recover Emily after her kidnapping by Faraz Hamzad, a powerful Afghan tribal leader. FX describes the season’s central family conflict as an identity crisis: Hamzad, Chase, and Harper all claim Emily as their daughter. That larger dispute gives the request for Bote’s help—and the implication that Zoe’s return widens the story—its season context.
