The 1983 film The Outsiders brought a young ensemble to S. E. Hinton’s story of Greasers and Socs in Oklahoma. Its cast went on to very different careers: several became major film and television stars, while Patrick Swayze died in 2009. This cast guide maps the principal roles and summarizes career updates reported in a retrospective published March 25, 2026; “now” refers to that dated snapshot, not live tracking.

What the actors did after The Outsiders
C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy Curtis
Howell went on to appear in films including Red Dawn, The Hitcher, Gettysburg, and The Amazing Spider-Man, and in television series including Criminal Minds, Southland, and 1923. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2021, quoted in the March 2026 retrospective, he said, “It’s still a very important part of my life.” He also recalled seeing many “Stay Gold” tattoos among fans.
Matt Dillon as Dallas “Dally” Winston
Dillon’s later film work includes Drugstore Cowboy, There’s Something About Mary, Wild Things, and Crash, for which he received an Oscar nomination. In March 2026, the retrospective reported that he was expected to appear in I Play Rocky. That was a then-reported upcoming project, not confirmation here that the film has since been released or that his role is complete.

The Outsiders was released in the United States on March 25, 1983, adapting Hinton’s novel, first published in 1967. A CBS News 2013 anniversary article reported a $5 million opening weekend and $25 million total gross; those are historical figures from that article, not updated box-office totals. CBS also reported that Warner Bros.’ 2005 DVD re-release included 22 minutes of additional commentary, footage, and music. That history does not establish what home-video editions are currently available.
