Which Peanuts Comic Strips Are About New Year’s Eve?

The available evidence does not verify ten Peanuts newspaper strips about New Year’s Eve. One December 31, 1985 archive description is a lead, not a confirmed strip summary.

A responsible top ten cannot be established from the dated strip evidence available here. One archive description points to a December 31, 1985 strip involving party hats and Snoopy, but without confirming the strip image, its date and contents should not be treated as verified. That is not enough to rank ten comics—or even to describe this candidate as a confirmed New Year’s Eve strip.

Why there isn’t a defensible top ten

“Best” is an editorial judgment, not an official Peanuts ranking. A fair list would need to confirm each strip’s date, identity and actual New Year’s Eve relevance, then explain its choices using criteria such as holiday connection, joke construction, character insight and seasonal reread value. The evidence here does not verify ten entries against archival strip images, so supplying a ranked list would risk inventing details.

The strongest lead is a Texas Tech newspaper-archive description of a December 31, 1985 Peanuts strip involving New Year’s Eve party hats and Snoopy wearing one at the end. That description is a catalog clue, not verified dialogue or a substitute for checking the image. It should not be presented as a confirmed plot summary until the image and date are checked.

Adjacent newspaper dates do not establish a holiday theme. A calendar mention or a New Year’s Eve reference in surrounding page material is not proof that the Peanuts strip itself is about the occasion.

Peanuts strips, reprints and the TV special are different

Charles M. Schulz introduced Peanuts on October 2, 1950. The franchise FAQ describes the historical run as 50 years and 17,897 strips, and says strips still appearing in newspapers and on GoComics are reprints. Peanuts has said that no new strips will be drawn and published, in keeping with the Schulz family’s wishes.

The animated TV special Happy New Year, Charlie Brown is not a newspaper strip. The Schulz Museum describes Peppermint Patty hosting a New Year’s Eve party while Charlie Brown struggles to read War and Peace; it gives the special’s original air date as January 1, 1986. A tie-in book with the same title is also distinct from a collection of newspaper strips.

What a reliable ranking would need

  • Confirm the strip: match a dated index or archive record to an image of the strip itself.
  • Confirm the holiday connection: the strip’s content—not merely its publication date or nearby page text—must establish its New Year’s Eve or year-end subject.
  • Rank transparently: explain how seasonal relevance, gag construction, character moment and reread value shaped the order.

Until those checks support ten distinct entries, a “10 best” ranking would promise more certainty than the evidence allows.
