The approach is inventive, but the film’s horror, humor and family drama do not always fit together: the same absurdity that makes its set pieces memorable may leave viewers looking for steadier dread or deeper emotional connection.
What is The Monkey about?
Released in theaters on February 21, 2025, The Monkey is written and directed by Osgood Perkins, based on Stephen King’s short story, and produced by James Wan. King’s official film page describes twin brothers Hal and Bill discovering their father’s vintage toy monkey and witnessing horrifying deaths. They try to leave the object behind, but the deaths return, forcing them to confront the monkey again. Stephen King’s official film page lists NEON as the distributor; NEON’s page also describes the movie as an adaptation of King’s story.
Is The Monkey worth watching?
It is a strong fit for viewers who want inventive, outrageous horror with a comic streak, and a less certain choice for anyone hoping for sustained, serious-minded suspense. The Associated Press’s Jocelyn Noveck calls it absorbing and stylish, while also finding its blend of family drama, humor and bloody mayhem uneven. Noveck gives it two stars out of four; that is one critic’s rating, not an aggregate or a consensus score. Her review praises the creativity of the death sequences even as it acknowledges that the film’s mix will not work for everyone. Read the Associated Press review.
Is it scary or funny?
It aims to be both, leaning into dark comedy rather than maintaining unbroken dread. The deaths are presented with an exaggerated, absurdist quality that can make horror turn into a grim punchline. Perkins told Creative Screenwriting that centering the adaptation on estranged twin brothers made sense to him, and that comedy felt natural to the material. He described the deaths as so impossible and exaggerated that they could cross from frightening into comic territory.

That tonal switch is the film’s defining wager, not a promise that every scene will land as either a scare or a joke. If you enjoy horror that jolts between family pain and grotesque absurdity, the contrast is part of the appeal. If you prefer a consistent atmosphere of menace, the comic interruptions may weaken the tension.
How gory is The Monkey?
Expect bloody violence and gore to be central to the experience, rather than occasional or offscreen. The U.S. R-rating advisory reported by the Associated Press cites “strong bloody violent content, gore, language throughout and some sexual references.” Ratings and classification labels can differ outside the United States.

How do the family story and death scenes fit together?
The story’s emotional frame is a fractured family: the twin brothers’ estrangement, an absent father and a mother trying to parent. The monkey’s lethal appearances supply the spectacle, while those relationships give the mayhem a human context. The film’s unevenness lies in how well those elements connect. At times, the outlandish deaths and family material share a bleak, absurd sensibility; at others, the tonal jump can make the drama feel separate from the horror spectacle.
Perkins’s explanation of the comic approach offers a useful lens, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the balance convincing. The film asks whether time and distance can change how people face terrible things, while turning that idea into an unusually macabre entertainment. Whether that combination feels pointed or merely jarring is likely to determine how well the film works for you.

Is it based on a Stephen King story?
Yes. The Monkey adapts King’s short story of the same name. Screen Daily’s search-result description identifies the story as a 1980 work later collected in Skeleton Crew in 1985. The film’s premise keeps the uncanny toy and its connection to deaths at the center, while Perkins’s account emphasizes his choice to build the adaptation around estranged twin brothers.
