Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6, “The Price.” Joel appears in the episode’s flashbacks, not in its present-day story. Those memories culminate in his final conversation with Ellie: she gives him a chance to tell the truth about the Fireflies, and he admits what he did.
What happens in “The Price”?
Season 2, Episode 6 aired May 18, 2025. Directed by Neil Druckmann and written by Druckmann, Halley Gross, and Craig Mazin, it steps away from the present-day pursuit of Abby to trace the years Ellie and Joel spent in Jackson. The structure uses Ellie’s birthdays to show how their relationship changes over time.
The episode begins with young Joel and Tommy alongside their father, a brief look at the family history of violence and the hope that the next generation might choose differently. It then moves through Ellie’s birthdays, recalling Joel’s efforts to give her moments of happiness while the lie about the Fireflies remains between them.
Why does Joel kill Eugene?
As Ellie grows older, the memories show a more strained relationship. On patrol, Joel promises to bring the bitten Eugene back to Jackson. Instead, Joel kills him. Ellie tells Gail what Joel did, then confronts him with the broken promise: “You swore.”

The promise matters beyond Eugene. Joel’s decision to break it gives Ellie a fresh, immediate reason to challenge his word, while echoing the unresolved question of what he told her about the Fireflies. The episode connects an act of protection—or control, depending on how Ellie sees it—with the damage caused by his earlier deception.
What is the porch scene?
The closing flashback takes place after the New Year’s dance. Ellie tells Joel she knows he lied about the Fireflies and gives him the opportunity to tell her the truth. He admits what he did. This is the last conversation the two share, and it gives the episode its farewell: not a reunion in the present, but a moment of honesty that arrives after years of mistrust.

The episode then returns to Ellie in the present, still carrying grief and the unresolved relationship as she searches for Abby. The closing confession changes the weight of the earlier birthdays: the memories contain care and attempts at closeness, but they also lead toward the truth Joel withheld and the reconciliation they never get to finish.
How the birthday flashbacks shape the episode
The birthday framework makes time and emotional distance visible without turning the episode into a straight chronology. Each memory offers a different view of Joel trying to care for Ellie, and of Ellie becoming less willing to accept his explanations. Cinematographer Ksenia Sereda described the episode as one that “dives deeply into the Joel/Ellie relationship” in an interview with the Television Academy.

The museum outing, built around an Apollo 15 exhibit, is one of the most memorable birthday sequences. It recreates a flashback from The Last of Us Part II, while the episode’s broader arrangement places the birthdays and the final porch conversation in a frame that emphasizes the relationship’s evolution. The adaptation retains the emotional importance of the material while allowing the show to arrange and change scenes for television.
