Spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 1, “Future Days.” Five years after the first season, Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson—but sharing a home has not repaired their relationship. The premiere shows Joel trying to make amends while Ellie builds a life he cannot direct, and introduces Abby as a reminder that Joel’s past has not stayed behind.
What happens in “Future Days”?
The season-two premiere, “Future Days,” resumes the story five years after the first season. Joel and Ellie are in Jackson, Wyoming, a functioning settlement that has become their everyday home. HBO announced the seven-episode season for April 13, 2025, and described the five-year jump in its season announcement.
Before settling into Jackson, the episode opens with Abby and other young people whose lives were changed by Joel’s actions at the hospital. The flashback puts the consequences of his choice in view and gives the premiere’s domestic story an ominous frame: the past is still capable of reaching the present.
Why are Joel and Ellie estranged?
Ellie is nineteen and takes part in patrols, but the five years since the first season have not erased the rupture between her and Joel. They share a home and a history; emotionally, she keeps her distance. Joel wants to repair the relationship, and the episode makes that effort concrete when he seeks help from Gail, a therapist.

Therapy is one way the television adaptation makes their fracture visible beyond private conversations. Joel can ask for help, but wanting reconciliation does not give him the power to decide what Ellie should forgive or how quickly she should trust him. The premiere leaves that tension unresolved.
What changes for Ellie and Dina?
Ellie goes on patrol with Dina. They encounter danger outside the settlement, including infected. Ellie’s immunity remains undisclosed to Dina in the immediate aftermath; the episode does not show Dina learning Ellie’s secret.

Their connection deepens at Jackson’s New Year’s Eve dance, where they kiss. Seth reacts with homophobia, turning a private moment into a public confrontation. Joel tries to defend or intervene for Ellie, but she rejects his involvement. The scene joins the romance plot to the central family conflict: Joel’s instinct to protect Ellie no longer means he has authority over her choices.
What does Abby’s introduction signal?
Abby’s opening flashback establishes that Joel’s hospital actions have consequences for people beyond Joel and Ellie. Her desire for revenge connects the premiere’s settled routines in Jackson to violence in the past. The episode signals that this history will matter, but it does not resolve the threat or the estrangement in this first installment.

How does the episode compare with the game?
The game The Last of Us Part II is useful optional context for viewers interested in how the adaptation handles Jackson, Ellie and Dina, and the fallout from Joel’s choice. The television premiere gives Jackson’s community life room to register and uses therapy and public interactions to put Joel and Ellie’s distance on screen. Comparing further can spoil later story events, so the episode itself is best approached on its own if you want to avoid those revelations.
The title also echoes “Future Days,” a Pearl Jam song Joel plays for Ellie in The Last of Us Part II, a connection noted by Vanity Fair.
