Spoilers for The Good Doctor Season 7: Dr. Asher Wolke, played by Noah Galvin, dies in Season 7, Episode 5, “Who at Peace.” The episode aired April 2, 2024—five episodes before the series finale, not in the finale itself.
How Asher Wolke dies in “Who at Peace”
In the episode, Asher reconnects with his Jewish upbringing while helping a dying patient and arranging the patient’s wedding. He is also thinking about his future with his partner, Jerome Martel, as their second anniversary approaches.
After helping a rabbi return to a synagogue, Asher encounters two vandals. They appear to leave, then return and fatally attack him. Jerome is waiting at a restaurant, planning to propose. The episode’s account and scene details were reported by TheWrap and TV Insider.
Why the writers chose this ending
Series writer Adam Scott Weissman told TheWrap that Galvin was interested in moving on, which led the writers to create an earlier exit for Asher. Weissman also said the story let the show address antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ+ attacks while bringing Asher’s Jewish and gay identities together in his final episode.

Asher says, “I’m not just a Jew, I’m a gay one, too.” Weissman told TheWrap that the writers’ room was conscious of the “bury your gays” trope as it shaped the episode. He described Asher’s ending as satisfying and heroic from the writers’ perspective; that stated intention does not determine how every viewer will judge the choice. Weissman also said, “We came into this [episode] with the thought that life doesn’t always have happy endings. Sometimes things happen suddenly and in a tragic way.”
How far before the finale does Asher die?
Season 7 was The Good Doctor’s 10-episode final season. Asher dies in Episode 5, leaving five episodes before the series concludes. The finale, “Goodbye,” is Episode 10 and aired May 21, 2024.

TV Guide reported that the final season was initially planned for 13 episodes before ABC removed three installments. Executive producer David Shore called the 10-episode season “unfortunate,” given the year’s circumstances.
