That literal twist turns a wrestling taunt into an easy visual gag, whether it appears in a still image, an edit, or a deadpan reply.
There is no documented, authoritative ranking of the ten most important posts, so this is a curated guide to ten meme formats and variations—not a claim about the internet’s definitive top ten. To understand why they land, it helps to separate the joke’s original meaning from its online afterlife.
What “You Can’t See Me” originally meant
John Cena says the hand gesture began as a joke involving his younger brother Sean, who performed a dance while the family listened to hip-hop beats and dared Cena to try it on WWE’s Velocity. Cena adapted the motion: “Instead of shaking my head around my hand, I shook my hand around my head.” He later added the spoken phrase as he continued using the gesture. This account appears in a March 12, 2016 WWE excerpt from his book, Hustle, Loyalty & Respect: The World of John Cena (WWE’s excerpt).
The taunt was not originally a claim that Cena was literally invisible. He explained: “It works from a camouflage, invisibility aspect but ‘You Can’t See Me’ in general is telling someone they are not where I’m at competitively. I’m on another level.” The gesture and phrase were a boast that opponents could not match him. The meme takes the camouflage-and-invisibility reading and treats it as fact.

Why can’t you see John Cena? The joke behind the meme
A typical meme shows Cena plainly in a photo or scene, then captions it as if he is missing—or has the other people in the image to themselves. The audience can see him; the joke asks everyone to pretend otherwise. Know Your Meme describes this literal reading as the central online gag and documents image and video examples (Know Your Meme’s entry, added December 1, 2011 and updated December 15, 2024). Those are page dates, not proof of the meme’s first online appearance.
The hand gesture’s exact first appearance is unknown. USA Network gives 2002 as an estimate, not a confirmed debut date (USA Network’s explanation). Cena’s WWE source says the taunt became a fan rallying cry and that other athletes adopted it as a celebration, including LeBron James.

1. The “empty picture” caption
Show a photo with Cena clearly in frame and caption it as an empty scene, a picture of the other people, or a moment when he “wasn’t there.” The mismatch between the image and the claim is the whole punchline.

Frame a group shot as a search for someone who cannot be found, even though Cena is standing among the group. The mock-serious wording makes the audience participate in the denial.
3. The photo reply that ignores Cena
Reply to a picture containing Cena by commenting only on the other people in it, as though he were absent. This works especially well as a short, straight-faced reaction because it lets the original image deliver the visual evidence.

4. The “who is that?” reaction
Point at Cena in a photo and ask who the unfamiliar person is—or claim not to see anyone there. It turns the ordinary act of identifying someone into deliberate pretend blindness.
5. The crowd shot with one “invisible” guest
Use a crowded event photo and insist that only the visible attendees are present. Cena’s presence becomes an in-joke for viewers who spot him among the people.

6. The still image with an empty-space gag
An edit can make the invisibility premise more literal by emphasizing an apparently empty space where Cena would be expected, or by obscuring him in a visual gag. This is a practical variation of the premise, not a separately established named template.

7. The video that denies what it shows
In a clip, Cena can appear or perform the gesture while a caption or narrator insists he is not visible. Motion makes the contrast unfold over time: the viewer watches the evidence while the joke denies it.
8. The “look closer” bait
Invite viewers to find Cena in an image, then make the joke that there is nobody to find—or that they still cannot see him when he is obvious. The format borrows the setup of a visual puzzle without requiring a genuinely hidden figure.
9. The reaction to Cena being unmistakably visible
Sometimes the joke flips direction: rather than pretending Cena is absent, viewers point out that he is impossible to miss. Know Your Meme described renewed attention around his conspicuous appearance at the Oscars in March 2024, an inversion of the usual gag: people could see him very clearly.

10. The borrowed taunt in a sports celebration
When an athlete uses Cena’s hand gesture after a win, the reference carries the wrestling boast into a new sport. USA Network discusses Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese using the taunt around the 2023 NCAA women’s basketball championship game. Their use belongs to the gesture’s wider pop-cultural life; it did not originate the internet meme.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “You Can’t See Me” mean in a meme?
In a meme, it usually means the opposite of what the image proves: Cena is visible, but the caption or reply pretends he is not. That literal reading is distinct from Cena’s original competitive taunt. The contrast is what makes the format flexible: a still image can contradict a caption, a video can contradict narration, and a reply can ignore the person everyone can see.
The joke also works because viewers already recognize the gesture and phrase as part of Cena’s wrestling persona. Its meaning can shift from a boast about being on another competitive level to playful denial of an obvious presence, without changing the words or hand motion.
