1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTommaso Ciampa, Adam Cole and Shayna Baszler lead this editorial ranking of NXT’s most consequential heels. WWE has not published an official all-time list, so the order weighs the duration and clarity of each antagonist role, the effect on major rivalries and factions, and the turning points that shaped NXT stories—not championship days alone.
How this ranking works
This is a judgment about heel storytelling, not a WWE-sanctioned ranking. A championship reign can show that a wrestler occupied a central place in NXT, but it does not by itself prove how effective that wrestler was as an antagonist. The ranking gives greater weight to a sustained villainous role, consequences for a major feud or division, faction influence, and memorable betrayals or match outcomes. The documented events below are the evidence; the placement is editorial.
The 10 best heels in WWE NXT history
-
Tommaso Ciampa
Ciampa’s betrayal of his tag-team partner Johnny Gargano gave NXT a personal conflict with consequences that extended well beyond one match. WWE’s retrospective traces the rupture, Gargano’s revenge, Ciampa’s return and their renewed tensions. Gargano’s line, “Tommaso Ciampa is the worst person in NXT history,” is an in-story judgment from his rival, not a measure of audience consensus. The feud’s defining quality is how clearly Ciampa’s betrayal changed the relationship at the heart of the story. WWE lists his NXT Championship reign from July 25, 2018, to March 20, 2019, as 237 days; that chronology supports his place in the title picture, but the feud is the stronger case for ranking him first. WWE’s Ciampa–Gargano retrospective and NXT Championship history.
-
Adam Cole
Cole’s case rests on centrality: he became the inaugural North American Champion, led The Undisputed ERA through major group accomplishments, and later defeated Gargano for the NXT Championship. WWE records the faction retaining the tag titles and winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic at TakeOver: New Orleans. Cole’s rivalry with Gargano then supplied another high-stakes title story, concluding at TakeOver: Toronto in a steel cage match. WWE lists Cole’s reign from June 1, 2019, to July 8, 2020, as 403 days. That is WWE’s displayed title-history figure, not a rating of heel effectiveness; Cole ranks highly because his faction and rivalries repeatedly occupied the center of NXT’s stories. -
Shayna Baszler
Baszler’s championship run made her a defining antagonist in the women’s division. At TakeOver: New Orleans, she defeated Ember Moon to win the NXT Women’s Championship; at TakeOver: XXV, she submitted Io Shirai. Rhea Ripley eventually ended her reign, defeating her on the Dec. 18, 2019, episode of NXT. Those results establish a substantial title-era story and a sequence of consequential challengers. They do not, on their own, quantify crowd response, which is why Baszler’s placement reflects the documented role and stakes rather than an invented measure of heat. TakeOver: New Orleans results, TakeOver: XXV results and NXT results for Dec. 18, 2019.
-
Johnny Gargano
Gargano belongs on a heel list because his story with Ciampa did not leave him fixed in the role of the wronged friend. WWE’s account includes Gargano’s revenge and later renewed conflict, making the feud more complicated than a one-way betrayal. His placement is below Ciampa’s because Ciampa’s initial turn gives the rivalry its clearest antagonist catalyst, while Gargano’s heel case is tied more closely to that evolving relationship. WWE’s Ciampa–Gargano retrospective.

-
The Undisputed ERA
As a faction, The Undisputed ERA magnified the threat of its members: their tag-title retention and Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic victory at TakeOver: New Orleans put the group’s reach across more than one competitive lane. This entry recognizes the faction’s collective impact rather than counting Cole twice as an individual. WWE’s event record documents those achievements; their significance here is the way a single group could influence both the tag division and the wider title picture. TakeOver: New Orleans results.
-
Io Shirai
Shirai’s place here is rooted in the title stakes of her rivalry with Baszler: at TakeOver: XXV she challenged for the NXT Women’s Championship and lost by submission. That result makes her an important opponent in Baszler’s reign, but the cited event report alone does not establish a sustained heel run for Shirai. Her lower placement reflects that narrower support rather than a claim that the match lacked significance. TakeOver: XXV results.

-
Ember Moon
Moon’s title match against Baszler at TakeOver: New Orleans marked a major change in the women’s championship story: Baszler defeated her to take the title. That makes Moon part of a consequential antagonist narrative, though the result is stronger evidence of her role as a challenger than proof of a long-running heel identity. TakeOver: New Orleans results.
-
Rhea Ripley
Ripley’s victory over Baszler on Dec. 18, 2019, ended Baszler’s title reign and changed the direction of the women’s championship story. It is a defining turning point in the era represented here, but the result report establishes the title change—not a detailed account of Ripley’s heel character work. She ranks for her place in that story’s decisive outcome, with that distinction kept clear. NXT results for Dec. 18, 2019.

Finn Bálor
Bálor’s title chronology is well documented: WWE lists his first NXT Championship reign as 292 days, from July 4, 2015, to April 21, 2016, and records a later reign beginning Sept. 8, 2020. Karrion Kross defeated him to reclaim the championship at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. Those records establish title history and a major result, but they do not sufficiently document the character arc needed to rank Bálor higher on a heel-specific list. NXT Championship history and TakeOver: Stand & Deliver results.
-
Karrion Kross
Kross rounds out the list on the strength of a consequential championship result: at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, he defeated Bálor to reclaim the NXT Championship. The event report verifies that title outcome, but the evidence cited here does not establish enough detail about Kross’s heel portrayal to justify a higher ranking. His entry recognizes the stakes of the result without treating a championship win as proof of villainous character work. TakeOver: Stand & Deliver results.

What the title records can—and cannot—tell you
WWE’s NXT Championship history page, accessed Oct. 7, 2026, lists three relevant reign lengths: Cole at 403 days, Bálor’s first reign at 292 days, and Ciampa at 237 days. The figures describe WWE’s title chronology, not a ranking of heel quality. WWE’s page marks Cole’s reign with a dagger and notes that it ends in the next decade; the 403-day figure is therefore quoted as displayed rather than recalculated. A reign can confirm sustained championship prominence, but a heel ranking also needs story evidence: who betrayed whom, what rivalries changed, and which outcomes shifted a division.
| Wrestler | WWE-listed NXT Championship reign | What that fact establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Adam Cole | 403 days, June 1, 2019–July 8, 2020; WWE’s displayed duration, with its dagger note about the next-decade end date | Title-tenure chronology, not heel effectiveness |
| Finn Bálor | 292 days, July 4, 2015–April 21, 2016 | Title-tenure chronology, not heel effectiveness |
| Tommaso Ciampa | 237 days, July 25, 2018–March 20, 2019 | Title-tenure chronology, not heel effectiveness |
All three figures are from WWE’s NXT Championship title history, accessed Oct. 7, 2026.
