The Eternaut begins with a simple, terrifying image: lethal snow falling over Buenos Aires. Its more distinctive idea is what that disaster puts at risk beyond survival—the habits, history and neighborhood ties of a specific place. Netflix’s six-episode Argentine series, created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro, follows Juan Salvo and other survivors as they try to endure the snowfall and discover that it is the opening move in an invasion.
What is The Eternaut about?
When a toxic snowfall kills people across Buenos Aires, Juan Salvo and a group of survivors must improvise ways to protect themselves and decide whom they can trust. The danger escalates from an apparently environmental catastrophe into an invasion, shifting the story from a fight against exposure to a struggle to understand who—or what—is attacking.
That progression gives the premise its tension: the first emergency is immediately legible, while the larger threat is not. The series’ central dramatic question is therefore not just how people survive the snow, but how they respond when the rules of the disaster keep changing.
Does the Buenos Aires setting matter?
It does more than provide a backdrop. The series is set and was filmed in Buenos Aires, and its Argentine details—including truco, mate and Juan Salvo’s Malvinas/Falklands War history—give the familiar apocalypse setup a local texture. These details make the story’s scale personal: survival happens among recognizable customs and relationships, not in an interchangeable disaster zone.

The Malvinas/Falklands connection carries particular weight. In a May 2025 Associated Press report, Ricardo Darín described the conflict as “not closed” and “still a bloody wound.” That is a historical burden attached to Juan’s character, not simply another piece of science-fiction lore.
How does the series adapt the graphic novel?
The Eternaut adapts the Argentine graphic novel by Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, first published in 1957; Netflix’s explainer dates its installments to 1957–1959. Stagnaro has described his approach as trying to remain faithful to “that child reader who came across the story for the first time,” and to recover the feeling of an adventure unfolding “on the corner of your neighborhood.” The series’ move to live action makes the translation itself part of the appeal: the neighborhood must feel both ordinary enough to recognize and strange enough to become a survival landscape.

The source also has a history that should not be folded casually into the fiction. Oesterheld and his four daughters were disappeared during Argentina’s military dictatorship. The Associated Press reported in May 2025 that the series renewed public attention to the family’s story and the search for missing grandchildren. That record is not a plot twist or promotional flourish; it is part of the real history surrounding the work and its author.
How does the six-episode format shape the story?
Netflix announced a six-episode first season. That compact format suits a survival story built around escalating revelations: each shift in the threat can reshape what the characters need to do next. It also leaves less room than a long-running series for detours away from the immediate crisis. Whether the suspense stays taut across all six episodes depends on how well the character conflicts and the invasion’s unfolding logic develop together.

The production scale suggests an effort to make the setting tangible. Netflix said filming ran in Buenos Aires from May to December 2023, using more than 35 real locations and more than 25 virtual-production stages. Those are Netflix’s production figures, not an independent assessment of the finished effects.
Is The Eternaut worth watching?
For viewers drawn to science fiction rooted in a particular culture, The Eternaut has a compelling foundation: an immediately graspable survival crisis, a widening invasion mystery, and an Argentine setting with historical and everyday specificity. Its most interesting promise is that apocalypse need not erase local identity; the way people live, remember and rely on one another can shape how the disaster is experienced.

It is also a natural choice for readers curious about how a landmark Argentine graphic novel travels to the screen. The show’s premise and cultural context offer clear reasons to seek it out, while the available production information alone cannot settle questions about episode-to-episode pacing or how successfully the adaptation handles its ending. Netflix premiered the first season globally on April 30, 2025; availability can vary by country.

Readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source can look for Oesterheld and Solano López’s original graphic novel. The series is an adaptation of that work, rather than a separate story using only its title.
