Spoilers for the 2025 Netflix film The Electric State. Michelle disconnects her brother Christopher because his brain is powering Sentre’s network, and he asks her to end his life. Her choice disables the company’s drones and neurocasters and helps expose its experiments. The final robot scenes leave one question deliberately open: Cosmo’s return may suggest a trace of Christopher remains, but the film does not confirm that he is alive.
Why does Michelle disconnect Christopher?
At Sentre headquarters in Seattle, Ethan Skate has kept Christopher alive because Christopher’s brain powers the company’s mainframe, including its military drones and neurocaster technology. During the final battle, Michelle reaches him and uses a neurocaster helmet to communicate directly with his mind.

Christopher tells Michelle that he thinks he needs to die and asks her to be the one to do it. She shuts down his life functions. The act is a sacrifice made at Christopher’s request, not an accidental system failure or a decision to abandon him.
What happens after Christopher dies?
With Christopher’s brain no longer powering Sentre’s systems, the company’s drones around the world are disabled and the neurocaster network goes offline. Information about Sentre’s experimentation on a human child becomes public, bringing down Sentre and Skate. Michelle then sends a video message to people around the world.

Michelle’s personal resolution is painful rather than triumphant. Millie Bobby Brown describes her as moving from the hope that she can bring Christopher back to understanding that she has to let him go and remember who he was. She completes her search, but cannot restore her brother or the family they had.
What happens to Cosmo and Herman?
Cosmo’s return is left uncertain
In the landfill, Cosmo comes back to life as Oasis’s “Wonderwall” plays. The moment hints that some part of Christopher’s consciousness—or perhaps only an electrical trace of him—might remain in Cosmo’s wiring. The film does not establish that Christopher has been resurrected, so the scene works as an ambiguous coda rather than a confirmed reunion.

Herman survives in miniature
Herman appears badly damaged, but his large head opens to reveal a miniature version of himself. After Keats expresses his feelings, Herman answers with a joke, bringing their relationship back to its affectionate banter. Anthony Russo describes them as former wartime adversaries who found friendship and humanity in one another.
What does the ending say about technology?
The film’s conclusion is not a call to reject all technology. Michelle uses technology to reach Christopher, but Sentre’s systems have also turned a child’s brain into infrastructure and helped disconnect people from one another. Joe Russo told Netflix Tudum that the film’s message is to stay connected to the people around us, rather than let technology become a way of withdrawing from them.

Chris Pratt describes him as someone who believes the world is too far gone and has been running from abandonment and betrayal by the army. Meeting Michelle’s hope gives him something to live for. His change is less about a sudden cure for the world’s problems than a renewed willingness to engage with another person.
Colonel Bradbury’s final shift points toward coexistence, too: after witnessing Skate’s actions, he makes peace with Mr. Peanut, the robot resistance’s figurehead. The conflict ends not with one side’s total victory, but with a possibility of humans and robots living alongside one another.

Is this the ending of Simon Stålenhag’s book?
No. This explanation covers the 2025 film’s ending. Netflix identifies the film as an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 illustrated science-fiction book, The Electric State. The publisher describes the book as following a runaway teenager and a small yellow toy robot traveling west in late 1997. The film’s Sentre plot and Christopher’s sacrifice should not be presented as the book’s ending; the available source accounts do not establish a full scene-by-scene comparison.
Simon & Schuster lists the source book as a 144-page paper-over-board edition published by Skybound Books on September 25, 2018, ISBN 9781501181412. Those details identify the edition, not its current availability or price.
