The Curse is worth watching if you enjoy comedy that makes ordinary conversations feel perilous and stories that refuse to stay in one genre. Across ten episodes, Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie turn a New Mexico housing project—and the reality show built around it—into an increasingly uneasy study of image, good intentions and control. Calling it the weirdest show of 2023 is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking; what makes it memorable is how its awkward comedy gradually begins to feel like suspense.
What is The Curse about?
Whitney and Asher Siegel are newlyweds trying to bring eco-conscious housing to Española, New Mexico. Their project also becomes the subject of a home-improvement reality show, with producer Dougie seeing television potential in the couple’s story. A24’s series description supplies the premise; the friction between the couple’s public image and the story the camera captures is where the show finds much of its bite.

That setup invites a reading of the series as satire about image-conscious altruism: what happens when doing good is bound up with being seen doing good? The show does not need to make its characters simple villains for the question to sting. Their plans, self-understanding and performance for the camera do not always line up, and the gap becomes part of the drama.
Why does The Curse feel so strange?
Awkwardness becomes suspense
Fielder’s comic rhythms make social encounters feel exposed: a pause, a strained attempt at friendliness or a small act of self-justification can carry an uncomfortable charge. The unease is not just a setup for jokes. As the show proceeds, that discomfort makes viewers wonder what will go wrong, and whether an apparently minor interaction is harmless at all.

The genre keeps shifting
The series begins in the territory of scripted satire about real-estate television, then leans harder into psychological-thriller tension. TIME’s 2023 review describes that progression and points to the show’s deliberately uncomfortable performance style and unusual finale. The shift is a defining feature, not a promise of a conventional thriller payoff: The Curse is interested in ambiguity as much as resolution.
TV Guide critic Allison Picurro called it “one of the most original series of the year” in a 2023 review. That is one critic’s assessment, but it captures the appeal for viewers who want a series willing to make familiar material—marriage, property, television—feel unpredictable.

What themes does the series explore?
The housing project provides more than a backdrop. It gives the show room to examine who benefits from redevelopment, how class and racial guilt shape public gestures, and what happens when a community becomes part of someone else’s television narrative. Religion and marriage also enter the series’ unsettled mix. These are useful interpretive lenses rather than a single official explanation of what the show means; the Associated Press discusses these themes in its January 2024 report.
Dougie’s role sharpens the reality-TV angle. The camera does not simply record the couple: a producer shapes their story into something viewers might watch. That makes the show’s central tension both personal and performative—between how people understand themselves and the version of themselves a production can put on screen.

How do the performances shape the show?
Stone anchors the series as Whitney, while Fielder plays Asher and Safdie plays Dougie. Their contrasting styles help sustain the tonal instability: the people in the same scene can seem to be operating by different social rules, even before the plot’s unease deepens. The result is less a conventional ensemble comedy than a sustained collision of awkwardness, ambition and pressure.
The performances are deliberately uncomfortable. That choice will be a draw for viewers who enjoy watching characters struggle through silences and misreadings; it may frustrate anyone looking for breezy comedy or easy emotional access. The series asks for patience with discomfort rather than smoothing it over.

Is The Curse worth watching?
Yes, if you are open to a show whose tonal changes and ambiguity are part of its point. Its ten-episode structure gives the housing-and-television premise room to grow into a stranger, more psychologically charged story. If you prefer comedy with a steady rhythm, clear likability or tidy explanations, its cringe-heavy performances and unresolved edges may be a poor fit.
The reception also showed a divide between critical enthusiasm and audience response. In a report published January 12, 2024, the AP cited Rotten Tomatoes scores of 94% for critics and 35% for audiences at that time. Those were historical figures reported secondhand, not current scores; they are best understood as a dated snapshot of how differently the series was being received.
