In the Godfather film trilogy, Vito and Carmela Corleone have four biological children: Sonny, Fredo, Michael, and Connie. Tom Hagen is raised as part of the household and treated as a son, but he is not one of Vito’s birth sons. The family tree also includes Michael’s two marriages, Connie’s marriage to Carlo Rizzi, and Sonny’s son, Vincent Mancini.
This guide follows the film trilogy rather than attempting to reconcile every difference between the films, Mario Puzo’s novel, and later licensed or prequel material. Paramount identifies the 1972 film as based on Puzo’s novel and credits Francis Ford Coppola as director on its official film page.

The Corleone family tree
- Vito Corleone and Carmela Corleone are the parents of Sonny, Fredo, Michael, and Connie.
- Tom Hagen was taken in by Vito as a boy and raised in the family. Sources describe him as adopted or de facto adopted; he is not a biological son.
- Sonny has a son, Vincent Mancini.
- Michael marries Apollonia first and Kay Adams later. Michael and Kay have two children, Anthony and Mary.
- Connie marries Carlo Rizzi.
In a diagram, use separate line styles or labels for biological descent, marriage, and adoption or upbringing. Keep titles and jobs—such as Don, consigliere, or caporegime—apart from the kinship lines. The story’s criminal organization overlaps with the family, but its hierarchy is not the same thing as the family tree.
Who are Vito and Carmela’s children?
Santino “Sonny” Corleone
Sonny is Vito’s eldest son. His son, Vincent Mancini, becomes a key link between the family’s next generation and the succession story in The Godfather Part III.

Is Tom Hagen Vito Corleone’s biological son?
No. Tom is not one of Vito and Carmela’s four birth children. Vito takes him in as a boy, and Tom grows up within the household as a son in practice. He is also the family’s lawyer and consigliere. Those family ties and professional duties explain his importance, but his role as adviser should not be mistaken for biological descent.
How do Michael’s marriages fit into the tree?
Apollonia
Michael meets Apollonia while hiding in Sicily, and they marry. She is killed by a car bomb intended for him.
Rank #3
Kay Adams
Kay is Michael’s girlfriend at the start of the story and later becomes his wife. Their relationship changes over the trilogy; Anthony and Mary are their children.
Where does Vincent Mancini fit?
Vincent is Sonny’s son, making him Vito and Carmela’s grandson. In The Godfather Part III, he succeeds Michael as head of the family. This is a succession in the family’s criminal leadership, not a change in who is related to whom.

Family relationships versus the Corleone organization
The Corleone name can refer both to relatives and to people working within the organization. A family tree should show blood relationships, marriages, and Tom’s upbringing separately from organizational positions. In particular, being a consigliere describes Tom’s work for the family; it does not make him a birth son.
Paramount’s film page identifies the movie and its adaptation credit. TIME’s 2022 anniversary essay discusses the opening family dynamics, including Tom’s status in the household. SparkNotes’ trilogy character guide summarizes the relationships among the principal characters. The University of Michigan Film Collection’s film catalog provides a cast reference for the 1972 film.
