Many of Rihanna’s most documented philanthropic efforts run through the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), which she founded in 2012 in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. The work spans health care, disaster resilience, climate solutions, education, arts and culture, and economic opportunity. The examples below distinguish CLF’s grants and partnerships from work delivered by local organizations—and attribute outcomes to the foundation’s own reporting.

1. She founded a lasting philanthropic foundation

Robyn Rihanna Fenty founded the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 to honor her grandparents. Rather than relying only on one-time gifts, the foundation provides an enduring structure for grants and partnerships. CLF describes its current work across the Caribbean, East Africa, and the U.S. South, organized around climate solutions, women’s entrepreneurship, arts and culture, health access and equity, and future generations. CLF’s About page outlines that present-day framework.

As Rihanna puts it in a statement reproduced on the foundation’s homepage: “Today we have global reach, but that notion of love for community and for our roots runs deep in the DNA of the foundation.”

2. She helped support cancer care in Barbados

CLF says its history began with a grant to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. Its work there includes the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, with a donation of radiotherapy equipment. The foundation’s 2022 report also describes later support for hospital resilience. These are CLF-reported contributions to Barbados health care, not evidence that one donor or grant alone produced a particular patient outcome. CLF’s 2022 annual report documents the historical work.

3. She backed more resilient schools in the Caribbean

Westbury Primary School, Barbados

CLF’s 2022 report describes upgrades at Westbury Primary School intended to help the school withstand disasters and maintain essential services. The work included solar power and battery backup, roof and shutter improvements, water storage, safer exits, and accessibility features.

Hopewell Primary School, Jamaica

CLF’s 2025 report describes a major investment in Hopewell Primary School, designed to serve as both a learning environment and a designated hurricane shelter. The report presents it as a project under development; it should not be confused with the Barbados school or described as completed without a current confirmation. CLF’s 2025 annual report covers the Jamaica investment.

4. She invested in climate resilience and locally led solutions

CLF says it funds community partners working on clean energy, health systems, environmental justice, and community organizing. Its 2025 annual report says the foundation deployed more than $27 million to 39 partners between 2021 and 2025, reaching more than 2.8 million people. Those are figures reported by CLF for that period; they describe its portfolio’s funding and reach, not a separately established estimate of Rihanna’s individual impact.

5. She supported emergency preparedness and recovery

CLF describes its approach as combining rapid response with longer-term preparedness and adaptation. Its 2025 report discusses support for community organizations after the Los Angeles wildfires and continued hurricane recovery funding in the Caribbean and U.S. South, including assistance to partners affected by Hurricane Helene. This is foundation-reported support delivered with community partners, not a claim that Rihanna personally directed field operations.

Talk That Talk [LP]
  • Rihanna's sixth studio album, Talk That Talk, was released in 2011 by Def Jam Recordings and includes her 11th chart-topping hit on the Hot 100, "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris

6. She helped expand mobile health care in the Eastern Caribbean

CLF reports supporting the launch of the Eastern Caribbean’s first solar-powered mobile health clinic with the St. Vincent Planned Parenthood Association. In its 2025 report, the foundation says the association reached more than 25% more residents in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the year after the clinic launched than in the prior year. That figure refers to the partner’s reported reach; it does not measure a change in health outcomes or isolate the clinic’s effect from other factors.

7. She invested in scholarships and young people

CLF places scholarships, education, and youth programs under its Future Generations pillar. The foundation reports awarding scholarships to three students in 2025. That is an annual figure, not a cumulative total of recipients.

8. She backed women’s entrepreneurship in the U.S. South

CLF launched a women’s entrepreneurship initiative in the U.S. South in 2025. Its first phase supported organizations in South Carolina that offer training, mentorship, professional networks, and access to capital. The model is to fund and support local organizations, rather than to make a direct award to every entrepreneur who may benefit from their programs.

9. She helped invest in Caribbean arts and culture

In 2025, CLF and the Mellon Foundation launched the Ripple Effect to support Caribbean artists, institutions, and creative ecosystems. The initiative includes funding, fellowships, and institutional support, extending CLF’s portfolio beyond health and disaster-related work.

10. She mobilized community-led grantmaking and partnerships

CLF’s homepage says it has distributed more than $100 million in grants since 2012 and that 100% of its grantee organizations are community-led. The homepage also displays a figure of 35 community partners, without giving a separate measurement cutoff for that figure or the community-led percentage. In its 2025 report, CLF says it invested $4.8 million across 38 grantee partners that year, and that those partners leveraged $7.25 in additional funding for every $1 CLF invested. These figures describe different periods and denominators, so they should not be combined into one measure. CLF’s homepage presents its current topline figures; the 2025 annual report covers that year’s grants and leveraged funding.

What these examples show—and what the numbers do not

Together, the examples show a philanthropic portfolio that pairs emergency support with longer-term work, from resilient schools and health access to scholarships, entrepreneurship, and cultural institutions. Many projects are grants or partnerships carried out by local organizations. The outcomes and reach figures cited here are published by CLF; the available reporting does not establish one independently measured statistic for the overall effect of Rihanna’s philanthropy.
