If you want anime with anthropomorphic animal characters, start with BEASTARS for social drama and mystery, BNA: Brand New Animal for action and social fantasy, or Aggretsuko for workplace comedy. These three make a useful shortlist, not a definitive ranking of ten: the available title-level evidence supports comparisons among them, but not seven additional placements.
How these three anime differ
The order below is a recommendation by fit, not an objective measure of quality. It compares tone, the role of animal identity, and the kind of story each series tells.
| Anime | Best fit | Story emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| BEASTARS | Social drama and mystery | Instinct, social divisions, and a school murder investigation |
| BNA: Brand New Animal | Action and social fantasy | A beastman protagonist navigating a society shared by humans and beastmen |
| Aggretsuko | Workplace comedy | An office worker channeling frustration through death-metal karaoke |
1. BEASTARS: best for social drama and mystery
BEASTARS is the strongest starting point if you want animal identity to shape both the social world and the central conflict. Fuji TV’s official synopsis describes carnivores and herbivores living under a serious taboo around meat consumption. After a student is murdered at Cherryton School, wolf Legoshi’s uneasy bond with dwarf rabbit Haru unfolds amid suspicion and social tension. The synopsis asks, “Is it love? Or simply hunger?”—promotional wording that captures the story’s entanglement of feeling and instinct.
Netflix identifies the anime as based on Paru Itagaki’s manga. In a Netflix article published February 28, 2026, the manga is described as having sold more than 10 million copies in circulation worldwide; that figure concerns the manga, not the anime’s audience. Netflix’s article also discusses the final season’s conclusion.

- Cute Antelope plush doll

- Good quality toy models worth collecting
2. BNA: Brand New Animal: best for action and social fantasy
BNA shifts from BEASTARS’ school mystery to a broader fantasy setting. Its official story page describes humans and beastmen coexisting and follows Michiru, a 17-year-old tanuki beastman, after she arrives in Anima-City. Choose it when you want a beastman protagonist and a society-level premise in an action-oriented story.
The official site says the TV broadcast began April 8, 2020, while Netflix began exclusive early streaming of episodes 1–6 on March 21, 2020. Those are distinct release milestones, not conflicting dates.

3. Aggretsuko: best for workplace comedy
For a lighter, everyday setting, Aggretsuko follows Retsuko, an office worker who copes with workplace frustrations by singing death metal. Netflix’s series page describes the premise and identifies season 5 as the final season; Netflix lists its U.S. release date as February 16, 2023. It is the clearest pick here if you want comedy about work life rather than a mystery or action-driven social fantasy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you watch first?
- Choose BEASTARS for a murder mystery shaped by instinct and divisions between carnivores and herbivores.
- Choose BNA for action built around a beastman protagonist and a human–beastman society.
- Choose Aggretsuko for comedy centered on office frustrations and an unusual musical outlet.
This is a limited, evidence-backed shortlist rather than a complete ten-title ranking. Other anime may fit the broad idea of anthropomorphic characters, but these three are the entries substantiated here; extending the ranking without comparable title-level support would imply certainty the available descriptions do not establish.
