The available evidence supports eight animated series or seasons as notable 2025 picks, but it does not support a defensible top ten or a single consensus ranking. This list brings together Emmy recognition, a critic-score listing and a staff year-end ranking without pretending they use the same scale. It includes both new series and returning seasons, and it places anime and Western animation together.
How this list is ranked
This is an editorial shortlist, not a universal “best of” verdict. The Television Academy’s 2025 Outstanding Animated Program nominees and winner provide one signal; Metacritic’s critic-score listing and GamesRadar+’s staff ballot provide different ones. Their methods and eligibility rules are not interchangeable, so the order below is a guide to the strength and kind of recognition documented—not a composite score or a claim that one show objectively outperformed another.

The scope includes series that debuted in 2025 and returning seasons that aired during the year. That is broader than Metacritic’s new-series list, which excludes returning shows, and different from GamesRadar+’s review-publication window, which ran from December 1, 2024, through November 30, 2025.
Eight notable animated shows of 2025
-
Arcane
Arcane won the Television Academy’s 2025 Outstanding Animated Program award for “The Dirt Under Your Nails.” That makes it the clearest award-backed pick on this list. The result is recognition in one Emmy category, not proof of a universal number-one ranking.

Common Side Effects
This series was an Outstanding Animated Program nominee at the 2025 Emmys for “Cliff’s Edge.” Its nomination places it among the Academy-recognized animated programs of the year.
-
Love, Death + Robots
The anthology was nominated in the same Emmy category for “Spider Rose.” Its place here reflects that specific nomination; the award result does not establish a comparative rank against the other nominees.
Rank #2
-
Bob’s Burgers
The long-running animated comedy received a 2025 Outstanding Animated Program nomination for “They Slug Horses, Don’t They?” It is a returning series, illustrating why a list limited to new debuts would produce a different set of recommendations.
-
The Simpsons
“Bart’s Birthday” earned a 2025 Outstanding Animated Program nomination. Like the other nominees, it is supported here by Academy recognition rather than a directly comparable critic score.

Long Story Short
Metacritic’s 2025 television browse page listed this animated adult comedy at 89 Metascore. That is a critic-score snapshot on a general TV ranking page, not an animation-only placement or a permanent rating; the page may change.
-
Star Wars: Visions season 3
GamesRadar+ placed season 3 at number 24 in its year-end television ranking. The outlet describes the anthology as featuring different art styles and nine new shorts. The position is from a staff list covering television overall, not an animation-only ranking.
Rank #4
-
King of the Hill season 14
GamesRadar+ placed the animated sitcom’s revival season at number 15 in its year-end television ranking. As with Star Wars: Visions, this is a placement on a full-TV staff list, not a directly comparable animation-specific score.
Why this is not a ranked top ten
No single source in the evidence establishes a comprehensive top ten, and the documented candidates number eight. Adding two titles or assigning precise comparative positions without comparable evidence would create a ranking that looks more certain than it is.

- Metacritic: its 2025 best-new-TV list covers first-year series debuting in the US, excludes returning shows, and ranks by critics’ grades on a 0–100 scale. As of December 19, 2025, it excluded shows with fewer than seven reviews.
- The Television Academy: its award identifies one winner and four nominees in Outstanding Animated Program. It is category recognition, not a ranked list of all animated shows.
- Rotten Tomatoes: its television awards use a weighted ranking that accounts for review-count variation. Eligible seasons or TV movies had to premiere or end in 2025, have at least 20 reviews from different critics and at least five Top Critic reviews; scores reflect the meters on December 31, 2025. Those rules describe its awards, but do not supply a comparable ranking for the eight picks above.
- GamesRadar+: staff members submitted ordered ballots of ten picks, combined into a 25-show list. A season qualified if the outlet could publish its written review between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025.
Choosing what to watch
Use the kind of recognition that matters most to you rather than treating these different signals as one score. If you want a 2025 Emmy winner, start with Arcane. If you want the clearest critic-score figure documented here, consider Long Story Short, while remembering that its 89 Metascore is a page snapshot. For an anthology with varied visual approaches, Star Wars: Visions season 3 is described as nine new shorts in different styles. For returning animated comedies, the evidence here includes Emmy nominees Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons, plus the King of the Hill revival.
Streaming availability is not established consistently for these titles and can vary by country and date. Check the official service catalogs for your region before subscribing or planning a watchlist.
