There is no official or universally agreed ranking of the best Batman comics. This list is an editorial selection built to show the character’s range: an origin, a crime mystery, psychological horror, landmark Joker stories, and a modern Gotham arc. Our No. 1 is Batman: Year One for its focused storytelling and value as a starting point.

Which Batman story should you read first?

If you want Batman’s early career to feel connected, start with Batman: Year One and then read Batman: The Long Halloween. DC describes the latter as a classic early-career story and a spiritual sequel to Year One; that makes the pairing a useful route, not a mandatory continuity order. For a deliberately different take, The Dark Knight Returns is an alternate-future story outside the main continuity.

DC’s 2014 list of 10 Essential Batman Graphic Novels includes several selections below, but it is not a ranked top ten. The order here reflects an editorial preference for craft, variety, and usefulness to readers choosing where to begin.

10 Batman stories worth reading

1. Batman: Year One

Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s origin tale follows Bruce Wayne and James Gordon as they find their footing in a corrupt Gotham. Its compact focus on Bruce’s early methods and Gordon’s work gives readers a strong introduction without requiring a long run of prior comics. DC calls it a definitive origin story in its official edition page.

It is our top pick because it makes Batman’s beginnings feel like a grounded crime story, not just a checklist of familiar origin beats. It is also the clearest entry point on this list.

2. Batman: The Long Halloween

This early-career crime mystery follows Batman, Gordon, and Harvey Dent as they investigate a killer targeting Gotham’s underworld on holidays. The shifting suspects and focus on organized crime make it a natural follow-up to Year One, while still working as a distinct mystery. DC’s beginner guide recommends it as a spiritual sequel to Year One and a classic story from Batman’s early years: How to Start Reading Batman Comics.

The DC Shop edition page describes a collection of the original 13-issue series and says that four additional story pages are restored in that edition. Those details apply to the listed collection, not necessarily to every edition of the story: Batman: The Long Halloween.

3. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Frank Miller’s story imagines an older Bruce Wayne returning to crime-fighting in a sharply altered Gotham. Its future setting lets the book explore what Batman might become rather than continue the mainline story of Year One. DC’s character history identifies it as a groundbreaking limited series set in an alternate future and out of continuity: Batman character history.

Read it for a forceful, stylized take on Batman’s legacy, not as the next chapter in a chronological sequence.

4. Batman: The Killing Joke

This concise, Joker-centered story examines the adversarial bond between Batman and his most famous enemy. It is a useful pick for readers more interested in the psychological stakes of that rivalry than in a sprawling Gotham mystery. DC includes it among its essential Batman graphic novels and highlights it as a major Batman-versus-Joker story in its beginner guidance.

5. Arkham Asylum

Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum takes Batman into psychological horror. Rather than emphasizing a conventional detective case, it uses Arkham’s oppressive setting and fractured atmosphere to create a stranger, more unsettling reading experience. DC’s essentials list describes it as a psychological horror story and includes it among its publisher-selected recommendations.

6. Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls

This modern-era arc pits Batman against a secret society tied to Gotham’s history. Its appeal lies in combining superhero action with a mystery that challenges Bruce’s confidence in how well he knows his city. DC’s essentials list names Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls as a modern classic.

7. Batman: Hush

Hush is a broad, guest-star-filled Batman adventure for readers who want Gotham’s familiar cast and a mystery threaded through a high-energy superhero story. It is less of a foundational origin than Year One, and less contained than The Killing Joke, but its ensemble approach offers a different pleasure: seeing Batman’s allies and enemies intersect in one extended case.

8. Batman: Ego

Darwyn Cooke’s Ego turns inward, making Bruce Wayne’s struggle with the identity of Batman the story’s central conflict. It suits readers who want a compact character study rather than a long sequence of battles or clues. Its smaller scale also makes it an easy contrast with the epic, alternate-future scope of The Dark Knight Returns.

9. Batman: The Black Mirror

The Black Mirror is a detective-focused Gotham story centered on Dick Grayson wearing the cowl, rather than Bruce Wayne. That change makes it a worthwhile choice for readers curious about how the role can be interpreted by someone else. It is best approached as a distinct period and version of Batman, not as a Bruce Wayne origin or a required early-career chapter.

10. Batman: Gothic

Grant Morrison’s Gothic leans toward supernatural mystery and horror, giving the list another tonal departure from grounded crime stories. Choose it if the eerie, mythic side of Gotham appeals more than a procedural investigation. It is an established-Batman story, so it is not the clearest first comic, but it demonstrates how much the character’s stories can vary in atmosphere.

Choose by the kind of Batman story you want

What you want Start with Why
A starting point and early-career context Batman: Year One A focused origin story; read The Long Halloween afterward for a suggested early-career continuation.
A crime mystery The Long Halloween Its holiday-killer investigation and Gotham underworld give it a detective-story center.
An alternate future The Dark Knight Returns It imagines an older Batman outside the main continuity.
A Batman–Joker psychological clash The Killing Joke A compact story centered on the conflict between the two characters.
Psychological horror or unsettling atmosphere Arkham Asylum or Batman: Gothic Both favor eerie, horror-inflected storytelling over straightforward superhero action.
A modern Gotham conspiracy The Court of Owls A contemporary arc built around a mystery embedded in Gotham’s past.

Do you need to read these in order?

No. Most are accessible as individual stories, and the list is not a single continuous sequence. The clearest connection is Year One followed by The Long Halloween, a suggested early-career route. The Dark Knight Returns is separate from main continuity, while other picks represent different eras, tones, or versions of the character.

DC’s 2026 beginner guide also names DC UNIVERSE INFINITE as a digital reading option. Its catalog and availability can vary, so check the service directly for the specific story and edition you want.
