A dark ending can be tragic, bleakly unresolved, or bittersweet: the characters may lose everything, a victory may come at a terrible cost, or the story may leave little reason to hope. But the available evidence for this topic verifies only two candidate anime, not a complete, reliable list of ten. Rather than inventing finale details or labeling ten titles without support, this guide identifies what can be responsibly recommended and what remains unconfirmed.
What counts as a dark ending?
“Dark” is a matter of interpretation, so it helps to distinguish the ending’s emotional register from the tone of the series as a whole. This guide treats a dark ending as tragic, bleakly unresolved, or bittersweet, and considers the scale of harm and the lasting cost of the outcome. A grim setting alone does not prove that a series ends grimly.

Two candidate anime, with spoiler limits
The available source material supports these two titles as candidates, but does not establish enough detailed finale information to present a fully verified ten-anime list. The descriptions below avoid reconstructing plot outcomes that the cited sources do not fully document.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a standalone, 10-episode story. Writer and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor has discussed the story’s intended standalone form and alternative, worse outcomes for its central character in an interview. Those facts make the anime a plausible fit for viewers seeking a dark conclusion, but do not by themselves establish a full account of the broadcast finale. Treat finale specifics as spoilers and consult the series itself if you want the exact outcome.
#1 Best Overall
DEVILMAN crybaby
The official site offers introduction and story material. In an interview, creator Go Nagai and director Masaaki Yuasa discuss the adaptation’s ending and the significance of depicting Miki’s death. That supports the ending’s importance to the adaptation, but the available official synopsis does not provide a complete finale account. Avoid treating a brief description as a spoiler-complete explanation.
Why this is not a ten-title list
Official episode-story pages for Puella Magi Madoka Magica and BANANA FISH appear among the relevant sources, but their cited excerpts do not establish either series’ final outcome. A separate secondary roundup groups DEVILMAN crybaby and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners under dark endings; that shows one editorial framing, not proof of a definitive ranking or a verified slate of ten.
Rank #2
Calling ten anime dark-ending recommendations would require checking each specific version and its finale. This matters when a work has multiple adaptations: a recommendation should identify whether it means a television series, a film, or a particular adaptation. The evidence available here does not establish a complete, source-backed set of ten, so adding more titles would risk confusing a dark series with one that actually ends darkly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose without spoiling the ending
- Decide whether you want an outright tragedy, a bleakly unresolved finish, or a bittersweet ending; those are different viewing experiences.
- Consider the scale of the consequences, from a central character’s loss to harm affecting a wider society or world.
- Check that a recommendation names the adaptation or version. Do not assume every version of a story has the same ending.
- Look for a clear spoiler warning before reading a detailed finale description.
