Roronoa Zoro, Shanks, and Kenshin Himura lead this editorial ranking of anime characters with memorable scars. The order weighs how distinctive each mark is, how well it complements the character’s design, its connection to the story, and the character’s lasting impact. Scar placement and meaning vary by character and continuity, so a visible mark alone does not tell the whole story.
How this ranking works
“Best” is a judgment, not an objective measure. This list balances four considerations: how recognizable the scar is, how naturally it fits the character’s visual design, how meaningfully the story connects it to character or history, and how memorable the character is overall. A strong design can rank highly even when the mark’s origin is not explained here.
As a point of comparison, Japanese entertainment site Anime!Anime! published a reader poll on August 26, 2022, based on responses collected August 12–19 that year. Its top three were Zoro, Shanks, and Kenshin Himura; three of its ten selections came from One Piece. That was a dated audience poll, not a representative survey or an objective verdict, and this ranking uses its selections as a reference rather than treating its order as definitive. 10 best anime characters with scars
1. Roronoa Zoro — One Piece
Zoro’s scarred appearance suits a swordsman whose resolve is as central to his identity as his skill. His marks are immediately recognizable, yet they do not feel like decoration: they reinforce the impression of a fighter shaped by demanding battles. That combination of strong design and character fit earns him the top spot.

2. Shanks — One Piece
Shanks’ three facial scars give his otherwise composed presence a distinctive edge. Their placement makes them unmistakable, while the contrast between the mark and his relaxed confidence helps make his design memorable. The scar is part of the character’s visual identity without needing to explain his entire history on sight.
3. Kenshin Himura — Rurouni Kenshin
Kenshin’s cross-shaped facial scar is one of anime’s most recognizable character marks. Its clear shape gives the design instant visual focus, and its association with the contrast between his violent past and his commitment to a different life gives it narrative weight. It is both a memorable image and a concise signal of the story’s concern with consequence and change.

4. Monkey D. Luffy — One Piece
Luffy’s scar beneath his eye is small compared with the dramatic facial marks elsewhere on this list, but its simplicity makes it easy to recognize. It fits a character whose defining traits are his directness and determination: the scar is a lasting visual detail, not an elaborate ornament. Its understated design is precisely what makes it effective.
5. Sanemi Shinazugawa — Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Sanemi’s heavily scarred appearance immediately communicates a rough, battle-worn presence. The marks make his face among the most striking in Demon Slayer and work in concert with his severe demeanor. His design is memorable because the scars feel integral to the impression he makes, rather than an isolated feature.

Scar’s name and facial mark make the scar inseparable from his character design. The mark gives him a stark, imposing silhouette and reinforces the sense that he carries a painful history. His place here recognizes the power of that visual identity while leaving room for other characters whose scars are more closely tied to a clearly defined arc.
7. Leona Kingscholar — Disney Twisted-Wonderland
Leona’s facial scar adds a sharp detail to a design built around confidence and authority. It stands out without overwhelming his other visual features, and it helps distinguish him at a glance. The result is a mark that contributes to her individuality and presence.
9. Saichi Sugimoto — Golden Kamuy
Sugimoto’s scarred, weathered appearance fits the harsh world he inhabits. His marks help convey a character accustomed to hardship, making his face feel lived-in rather than stylized for effect. The design earns its place through atmosphere and character fit as much as through a single iconic scar.

Anime uses scars in different ways: as a memorable design feature, a trace of past conflict, or a symbol connected to a character’s development. Those roles should not be assumed to be interchangeable. A character may have a scar whose origin is central to the story, while another’s mark may primarily shape their look; the details can also differ between anime and manga continuities.
For a confirmed example beyond this ranking, the official BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War character profile for Retsu Unohana says Zaraki inflicted the scar on her chest when she was seeking strong opponents. See the official character profiles. It is a useful reminder that the significance of a scar is character-specific, not something to infer from appearance alone.
